PRESSURE
Kinetic theory of gases
• Air has mass. Therefore air has
weight.
• Air continually moving and colliding
with things on Earth. These
collisions produce air pressure.
• We cannot see the particles of air
around us, so kinetic theory of
gases is used to explain the
existence of air pressure.
Kinetic theory of gases explains
he existence of air pressure :
• A gas consists of man particles which are
far apart from each other.
• The particles move freely in all directions.
• The particles continuously hit the walls of
the container and bounce back.
• A force is exerted by he particles on the
walls of container.
• This force produces a pressure on the
walls of the container.
the pressure in a closed
container changes when the
volume or the temperature of
the air is changed.
decreasing the volume causes
the pressure to increase.
a rise in temperature also cause
the air pressure to increase.
