INTRODUCTION
After Industrial Revolution world witness
• incalculable technological achievements
• population growth
• corresponding increases in resource use

Side Effects
• Pollution • Global warming • Deforestation
• landfill at capacity • Resource scarcity
• Toxic waste • Ozone depletion

Results
• Straining the limits of the Earth’s ‘carrying capacity’.
ie. Ability to provide the resources required to sustain life
while retaining the capacity to regenerate and remain viable.
3
What is a GREEN BUILDING?

A structure and using process that is environmentally responsible &

resource efficient throughout a building’s life cycle ie. from siting to
design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and
demolition.
Green building – also known as sustainable or high performance
building increases the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use
and harvest energy, water, and materials.

4
Environmental Impact Reduction
Reduces overall built impact on human health and the natural
environment by:

• Efficiently using energy, water and other resources.

• Protecting occupant health and improving employee

productivity.

• Reducing waste, pollution and environment degradation.

6
Environmental Impact Reduction
Rules adopted by Green Buildings:

1. The greenest building is the building that

doesn't get built.

2. Every building should be as small as possible.

3. It doesn’t contribute to sprawl.

7
GOALS OF GREEN BUILDING

 Siting and structure design efficiency

 Energy efficiency

 Water efficiency

 Materials efficiency

 Indoor environmental quality enhancement

 Waste reduction
8
Siting and structure design efficiency
Why is it important?
 Foundation of any construction project is rooted in 2 stages:
i. Concept stage ii. Design stage
 During all life-cycle stages of a construction project
• Concept stage minimize impact on cost & performance
• Design stage minimize impact on environment
 Buildings are complex products of diverse materials &
components of various design variables to be decided at the
design stage
 A variation of every design variable may affect the
environment during life-cycle stages 9
How can we achieve it?
Materials & Elements : Should reflect, transmit & absorb
solar radiation
 Energy Utilization : Use renewable powers to:
• Reduce utility cost
• Environmental impacts of energy
production
 Location : Develop in pedestrian friendly to:
• promote healthy life styles
• alternate modes of transportation
 Surfaces : If low traffic, use porous paved to:
• assist onsite storm water infiltration
• reduce erosion 10
Energy efficiency
Why is it important?
 Aims to reduce energy consumption in :
 embodied energy to extract, process, transport
and install building materials
 operating energy to provide services such as
heating and power for equipment.

 High-performance buildings use less operating energy.

 Embodied energy has greater importance.

 Make up as much as 30% of the overall life cycle
energy consumption. 11
How we can achieve it?
 Building Material :Wood instead of brick , concrete or
steel

 Orientation :Shade windows & roofs in summer

Maximize solar gain in winter
Effective Window placement
 Windows Insulation :High Efficient for building envelope
Barrier for conditioned space

 Energy Utilization :Renewable Powers like Solar, Hydro,

Wind ,Bio mass
 Design :Passive solar building design 12
Eg. Low-Energy Home
Water efficiency
Why it is important?

 Aims in
 Reduction of water consumption
 Protection of water quality

 Demands on supply exceed the ability of aquifer to

replenish itself

 Unnecessary wastage of water resources 13

How can we achieve it?
 Facilities : To increase the dependence of existing water
 Recycling : Water treatment and Heating :
• improves water quality & energy efficiency
• reduces amount of water in circulation

 Fixtures : Use water conserving fixtures

Eg. Ultra low flush toilets , Low flow shower
heads

 Design : Landscaping plan:

• Native , water retaining , drought resistant
plants
Rainwater harvesting system for irrigation 14
Materials efficiency
Why is it important?
 Efficient use and reuse of material reduces
i. Environmental impact ii. Liable cost
How can we achieve it?
 Use non-toxic, reusable, renewable & recyclable materials
such as
i. Coal combustion products ii. Foundry sand
iii. Demolition debris in construction
 Should be extracted & manufactured locally to minimise
embedded energy in transportation
 Manufacturing in off-site & bringing to site will:
i. Minimize waste , noise &dust ii. Maximize recycling
iii. High quality elements iv. Better OHS management
15
Some materials used in Green construction
Wool Brick Sustainable Concrete
• Wool + Seaweed Polymer+ • Crushed glass , wood chip,
Clay slag from steel industry
• 37 % more strength • Reduction in CO2 emission
• Resistant for cold and wet
Paper insulation
Solar Tiles • From recycled newspapers
• Absorbs energy from sun & cardboards
• Protect building • Filled with chemical foam
• Steady indoor temperature • Insect & Fire resistant

Ecofriendly Triple-Glazed Windows

• Use rapidly renewable • Super-efficient windows
• Bamboo instead of steel • Stops :Heat to enter building
16
Direct sunlight
Indoor environmental quality enhancement

Why is it important?
 We spend on average 90% of our time inside the buildings.

 Enhancing indoor air quality in building provide occupants,

a. comfort b. well-being c. productivity.

 Indoor air quality seeks to reduce

 volatile organic compounds (VOC)
 air impurities like microbial contaminants.
17
How can we achieve it?
Materials : Materials emit few/no carcinogens ,
irritants, reproductive toxicants etc.
Moisture resisting : Resist biological contaminant growth by
• insulated & tightly sealed envelope
• ventilation to eliminate moisture from
indoor activities
Design : HVAC system with well designed envelope
for
i. Thermal quality ii.Lighting quality
iii. Energy performance
Flooring : Smooth surfaced wood instead of carpets to:
• prevent allergies due to dust 18

Waste reduction
Why is it important?
 Aims to reduce waste of energy, water and materials
used during construction.

 Nearly 60% of India's waste comes from buildings.

 During construction phase , one goal should be to reduce

the amount of material going to landfills.

19
How can we achieve it?
 Materials : Wood is preferred :
• Light & easy to work , so easy enovation
• Extends useful life, thus reduces waste
 Design : Well designed buildings helps to:
• reduce amount of waste by occupants
• provide onsite solutions ,eg. compost
bin
 Deconstruction : After building’s useful life:
• demolish & haul it to landfills
• reclaim ‘waste’ to useful build materials
 Water Utilisation: Greywater is used for:
• subsurface irrigation
• non-potable purposes, Eg. Flushing 20

Indian Green Building Council
• The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), was formed in the year 2001 by
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The vision of the council is to usher
in a green building movement in India and facilitate India to become one
of the global leaders in green buildings by 2015.
• With a modest beginning of 20,000 sq ft (1,900 m2). green built-up area in
the country in the year 2003, today more than 1053 green buildings ( as
on April 2011) with a built-up area of over 648,000,000 sq ft (60,200,000
m2). are being constructed all over India, of which 147 green buildings are
certified and fully functional
• LEED India for New Construction
• LEED India for Core and Shell
• IGBC Green Homes
• IGBC Green Factory Building
• IGBC Green SEZ
• IGBC Green Townships
CONCLUSION:
Nowadays, we should make a way to maximize our natural
resources and also help our mother earth to get some relief
since pollution is everywhere plus the global warming that we
are all experiencing.
 Non-renewable energy is expensive and unsafe but did you
know that through green building we can save a lot of energy.
Before that, let's define first the meaning of green building
(know also as green construction is the practice of creating
structures and using processes that are environmentally
responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-
cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation,
maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction.
The importance of this is it lessen the consume of energy and
the pollution as well because the more we use nonrenewable
energy the higher the risk of pollution. 27
