Coral Reef Bleaching

By Joseph.

1
When corals are stressed by changes in
What is it conditions such as temperature, light,
or nutrients. They then turn white.

2
How is it caused.
• Coral reef damage is caused by humans
and reef tourism is not monitored carefully.
The coral reef turns white because the
temperature of the water rises. The water
then kill the symbiotic algae living in their
tissues, causing them to turn completely
white. Water temperature rising is caused
by global warming. Physical damage or
destruction from coastal development,
quarrying, destructive fishing practices,
boat anchors and recreational misuse
(touching or removing corals) also causes
bleaching.
3
What are the effects

• Coral bleaching can result in more than one

million aquatic species loosing there
habitat, and over 1million people over 100
countries will loose there job around the
world. Small island countries will not have
an active food source. There won’t be a
natural barrier from erosion. There also
won’t be the potential to use coral to fight
dangerous illnesses and diseases.

4
How can we stop it
• Do not disturb the coral reef
Try Remove
• Don’t break corals for souvenirs. the rubbish

j
• Try not to drop anchors on the coral reefs
• Don’t interact with coral reefs
• Try to remove all trash around coral reefs
• Reduce storm water run off
• Minimize using fertilizers
• Use more environmentally friendly modes of
transport
