CORAL REEF

AND
DROUGHT
By: Ms. Wallace
WHAT ARE CORAL REEFS?
• Coral reefs are living under water communities.

Types of Coral Reefs

1. Barrier Reef

2. Fringing Reef

3. Atoll Reef
BARRIER REEF

• These are found parallel to the coast and are usually separated by a shallow but wide area of

water called lagoon.

FRINGING REEF

• These are low platforms of corals lying close to the shore of an island, and is separated by a

narrow lagoon.
ATOLL REEF

• These reefs tend to form a horseshoe. They are usually linked to sunken volcanic cones.
BENEFITS OF CORAL REEFS
ENDANGERMENT/THREATS TO CORAL
REEFS
• Oil Spills

• Boat anchors

• Destructive fishing practices such as using dynamites

• Tourist

• Dredging/Quarrying

• Pollution
WAYS TO MINIMIZE THE THREAT TO
CORAL REEFS
• Educating public about the importance of coral reefs

• Establish protected areas or zones around the reefs

• Encourage fishermen to use less harmful practices

• Urge to public to not litter

• Fine persons who damage the reefs

IMPACT OF DROUGHT
WHAT IS A DROUGHT?

• This hazard occurs as a result of a lower than normal water supply or rainfall.

• Drought is a natural hazard, it has a slow onset, and it evolves over months or even years. It

may affect a large region and causes little structural damage. The impacts of drought can be

reduced through preparedness and mitigation.

IMPACT OF DROUGHT

1. May lead to infectious diseases, such as Cholera and gastroenteritis.

2. May lead to food shortage

3. Soil erosion

4. Death of livestock and crops

5. Rationed water supply for domestic use

MITIGATION STRATEGIES

• Practice water conservation

• Crop rotation
