WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC DRIVE ?
Electric drives can be stated as the systems which control the
motion of the electrical machines such as motors and generators.
This drive system is widely used in large number of industrial and
domestic applications like factories, transportation systems, textile
mills, fans, pumps, motors, robots etc. Drives are employed as
prime movers for diesel or petrol engines, gas or steam turbines,
hydraulic motors and electric motors.
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF AN ELECTRIC DRIVE
Electric drives are used to control the output power of the supply
and ensure that only necessary values are sent to the
load(modulator) after sensing the particular drive factor such as
current
WHAT IS HARMONICS
As we learned in previous classes Harmonics is a voltage or
current at a multiple of the fundamental frequency of the system
where current and voltage are distorted and deviate from sinusoidal
waveforms.
Harmonic currents and voltages are created by non-linear loads
connected on the power distribution system.
Harmonic distortion is a form of pollution in the electric plant that
can cause problems if the sum of the harmonic currents increases
above certain limits.
HARMONICS ON ELECTRIC DRIVES
Since harmonics affects all the components in the power system,
Electric drives are also affected in the same way as any electrical
device in the power system network.
Power electronic converters used in different types of electronic
systems can increase harmonic disturbances by injecting harmonic
currents directly into the grid.
EFFECTS OF HARMONICS ON ELECTRIC
DRIVES
Misfiring in variable speed drives,
Higher run temperatures than normal
Increased energy consumption
Accelerated wear on insulation
Inconsistent torque modulation
torque pulsations in motors
EFFECTS OF HARMONICS ON ELECTRIC
DRIVES
overheating of transformers, cables, motors, generators and
capacitors connected to the same power supply with the devices
generating the harmonics.
Electronic displays and lighting may flicker, circuit breakers can
trip, computers may fail and metering can give false readings.
Fuse and capacitor failure
