ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK

 Alternator Health Check will Cover the following,

 IR Value Measurement for Main Stator & Rotor , Exciter Stator & Rotor.

 Winding Resistance Measurement for Main Stator & Rotor ,

Exciter Stator & Rotor.
 Tightness Check for all Electrical Connections & Bolts & Nuts.
 Excitation Voltage Measurement.
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - MEGGERING - MAIN STATOR

 Open Bus Bar Top Cover.

Disconnect the Neutral Cable

to Earth.

Disconnect the Power &

Sensing Terminals P2, P3, 7, 8
A.V.R. Terminal from Bus bar to AVR.
Box
Switch OFF the MCB of DG on
Control Panel.

Connect Negative Probe of

Megger to Earth/ Body &
Measure the value by
connecting Positive Probe to
Respective Phase. (R, Y & B)

Note the IR value.

Note : Insulation Tester/ Megger Testing Voltage should

not exceed to 500 Volts.
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - MEGGERING - EXCITOR STATOR

 Disconnect Exciter Stator

F1 Connection (wire F1,F2) from
AVR terminals X , XX.
F2
A.V.R. Terminal  Connect Negative Probe to
Box Machine Body/Earth & Positive
Probe of Megger to either F1 or
F2 wire of Exciter stator.

 Note the IR value.

Note : Insulation Tester/ Megger Testing Voltage should

not exceed to 500 Volts.
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - MEGGERING - MAIN ROTOR

 Remove the Side Cover as

shown in Black Colour.
A.V.R. Terminal  Connect Negative Probe of
Box Megger to Earth.

Connect Positive Probe of

Megger to any one of RRA
Plate.

 Note IR Value.

RRA Plate (Aluminum)

ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - MEGGERING - EXCITER ROTOR

 Connect Negative Probe of

Megger to Earth.
Connect Positive Probe of Megger
A.V.R. to all the three Diode Pigtail at any
Terminal one side one by one (either Positive
Box
or Negative Plate)of RRA Plate.
 Note IR Value.

Diode Pigtail
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - WARNING

Note :
All IR Value Should be more
than 1 M. If IR is Less, need
Heat Treatment

 Warning! 
There will be Electrical Charge at Positive
Probe Connected Terminal after the IR
Test. You may get Electrical Shock (500 VDC).
Discharge the Charge by Shorting to
Body/Earth momentarily.
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - WINDING RESISTANCE

 Measure the Winding Resistance for the following & compare with earlier
Reading/Manual.

 Main Stator (R, Y, B with respect to Neutral)

 Main Rotor
 Exciter Stator (X & XX)
 Exciter Rotor (Diode Pigtail corresponding Phase)
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - WINDING RESISTANCE - MAIN STATOR

 After the IR Measurement.

 Measure the Resistance of
Main Stator as given
below.
A.V.R.

 Connect +ve Probe of

milliohmeter to respective
Phases (R,Y & B).

 Connect the -ve Probe of

milliohmeter to Neutral.

 Note the
RESISTANCE Value.
ALTERNATOR HEALTH CHECK - WINDING RESISTANCE - Exciter stator

 Disconnect Exciter Stator

Connection (wire F1,F2) from
AVR terminals X , XX.

Connect +ve Probe of

F1
milliohmeter to F1 of
F2 Exciter stator.
