    A pipeline was experiencing pinhole leaks due to corrosion along 400mm of its surface. An online sealing clamp initially stopped the leaks but began leaking from its edges after 6 months. As sealants also began leaking, the pipeline operator considered replacing the pipe, hot tapping, or fabricating a custom sleeve. They chose the sleeve option as it was substantially cheaper and viable while avoiding an expensive line shutdown. A custom sleeve was then used as a permanent repair.

    pipeline’s surface.

    An online sealing clamp immediately stopped the leaks.

    After 6 Months the sealing clamp’s edge began to leak.

    Sealants was used to arrest the leakage but sweating


    along its edges raised serious concerns.

    Pipeline operator considered 3 possible


    solutions:

    1. Line Shutdown & Pipe Replacement:


    Commercially not viable as refinery is running on
    continuous basis.

    2. Hot Tapping :Modification is very expensive.

    3. Sleeve Fabrication: Substantially cheaper &


    viable option.
    CUSTOM SLEEVE

    Custom design sleeve was used as a permanent repair. This case study was
    presented in petroworld 2013.
