Project has a finite duration i.e. it has starting and ending Program has no fixed duration. It can continue for few to

Project focus on desired outputs or deliverables. Program focus desired outcomes or benefits.

The success of the project can be measured based on cost, The success of the program can be measured in terms of the
schedule and quality. benefits realization.

The scope of project is limited to producing the deliverables. Program has a wide scope, focusing on benefits, and may
have to change the scope dramatically during the execution
to meet the changing needs of the organization.
Single project. It may include more than one projects.
EXAMPLES: PROGRAM

Prime Minister Laptop Program


• The program had five phases i.e. the same program was announced five times
and the total duration of the program was five years.
• The outcome of the program was to enhance quality of education and to
increase access to technology.
• With the advancement in technology, the design and specifications of laptops were
also improved.
• The program included several projects such as designing a website to receive
the applications, designing a laptop for distribution and so on.
EXAMPLES: PROGRAM

• Benazir Income Support Program

1) The program started in July 2008. Since then, it is announced every year.
2) The outcome of the program is maintain household consumption of the poor, women
empowerment and central registry for social safety net.
3) The first initiative was BISP food support providing, but with time, many other initiatives
were added to the programs such as Wasela e Haq, Wasela e Taleem, Wasela e Sehet, etc.

• Fulbright Scholarship Program


1) The program was first announced in 1946 and since then it is announced every year.
2) The goal/outcome of this program is to build mutual understanding between the people of
Pakistan and the USA.
3) The program includes several programs such Fulbright degree program, Fulbright
scholarship program and Humphery fellowship program.
EXAMPLES: PROJECT
• Sahiwal Coal Fired Power Plant (Project)

1) The project began on July 2015 and completed in July 2017.


2) The deliverable of the project was to construct a power plant with 1320 MW capacity.
3) The project was successful since it accomplished its objective of constructing a power plant with
1320 capacity within given budget ( actual cost: 1.8 billion dollars :: Expected cost: 1.9 billion
dollars )

• Burj Khalifa (Project)


1) The project started on 06 Jan 2006 and completed on 01 October 2009.
2) The deliverable of the project was to construct the world’s tallest building and one of the most
luxurious hotel of the world
3) The project was successful because it is indeed considered one of the most luxurious hotel and it
has achieved the title of world’s tallest building in Guinness book of world records.
4) The project cost 1.5 billion dollars.
EXAMPLES: PROJECT

• M9 Motorway (Project)

• The project started in march 2015 and inaugurated in April 2018. However,
the expected completion month was August 2017.
• The deliverables of the project was to convert 136 km long 4-lane super
highway from Hyderabad to Karachi in to 6-lane controlled-access motorway.
• The project cost 36 billion PKR.
