TECHNOLOGY.
TECHNOLOGY.
 According to the Cambridge
dictionary, technology is the
practical use of scientific
knowledge.
 Technology is the use of tools for
the benefit of man-food, shelter,
clothing.
TECHNOLOGY.
 Overtime man has mastered his
environment and has invented
classical tools which has eased his
stay on earth.- irrigation canal,
shelter, electricity, food
cultivation, animal domestication,
conquest of the waters, air, land.
INDUSTRIALIZATION/ NIGERIA.
 Health care services, among other
areas.
 Nigeria got industrialized
through:- slave trade, colonization,
missionary activities, discovery of
crude oil, imperialism, neo-
imperialism.
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER.
 With the influx of foreigners and their
way of life/ thought process came the
“new’’ and “preferred”.
 Transferred technology is evident in
politics, agriculture, culture,
economy, communication medium,
socials, values, festivals, names.
TECHNOLOGY
TRANSFER/IMPLICATIONS.
 Technological transfer is the
continuous dependence of the
host country on her guest(s).
Since W.W.1, industries have
searched for ready markets,
hence no escape for the prey.
TECHNOLOGY/ TRANSFER.
 Technology is not transferable,
only the finished products are
transferred. The brain, technical
knowhow, the patent, copyright is
never exchanged- Coca cola,
Guinness, refineries, Bata, Phillips,
Sony, Sanyo, LG, Toshiba, etc.
TECHNOLOGY ADAPTED.
 Technology can only be adapted,
i.e. sieving the relevant to suit the
needs of the interested country-
with the environment taken into
consideration.- politics in Libya,
Nkrumah’s Consciencism, Zik’s
Welfarism, etc.
TECHNOLOGY, ADAPTED.
 To adapt technology is to invent a
vehicle that is suitable for the
Nigerian terrain (durability, fuel
efficiency, rugged,)
 To build a refinery that can
process crude oil in its totality.
Etc.
ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGY.
 This is the ability by man to look
inward, discover his country’s needs
and utilize available skills and
techniques.
 Politics (communalism, welfarism,
Consciencism, socialism. )
 Agriculture (g/nut, palm oil, cocoa, etc)
ALTERNATIVE TECH.
 Economy (uniquely Nigerian-
batik cloths, leather works)
 Culture – ( food, festivals,
dressing, calendar - yearly,
monthly, weekly, rotational
markets, use of clay pots, mugs,
beds, building of mud houses, etc)
COLLABORATIONS.
 Former Gov. of Kwara state, Saraki
invited the Chinese to plant rice.
Former Bayelsa Gov. signed an M.O.U.
with Mahendra Patel to plant rice in
commercial quantity and revive palm
oil plantation. Former Ogun state Gov.
employed Chinese engineers to
construct roads and bridges, etc.
WHICH WAY NIGERIA?
 Where is Nigeria in all these?
(mathematician Chike Obi invented a war
vehicle which is in our national museum.
Yam pounder by a Nigerian, bought over by
Japan. Palm fruit/ oil taken over by Malaysia,
China carving wooden spoons, etc.)
 Medicine- malaria, check Kenya, Ethiopia,
Zimbabwe, etc.
 Present day numerical system by the Indians.
INDIGENOUS GOODS.
 What about the Abakaliki, Ofada
Minna rice? Benue, Nsukka, Abuja
yam? What about our massaging/
healing homes? Is it not possible for
our conventional drugs( gbomoro,
etc.) to be better packaged, content
and usage documented?
INDIGENOUS GOODS.
 Wonderful kola and it’s cures,
ewedu, bitter leaf, scent leaf,
ugwu and milk, ugwu and malt,
onion, garlic, ginger, herbs for
bathing/ drinking, use of unripe
pawpaw/ grape fruit/ sour water
from pap, etc.
INDIGENOUS GOODS.
 Where is our cassava bread, is it
not possible to be more hygienic
about the preparation of nunu and
fura, kunu, zobo, kilishi. Cannot
we preserve these for export
purposes? What is the use of each
ingredient in the local pepper soup?
UNIQUELY NIGERIAN.
 We as a country, as a scientific
community has enough to occupy
us and give us a place in the
world. No need to sell out
patents, serve the U.S. govt.(U.S.
Visa Lottery, migration to Saudi,
Canada, etc.
WASTE TO WEALTH.

 Economic angle: items that


we encounter with second
hand value include plastics,
tin, paper, bottle, etc can be
recycled ( reused by the
company or domestically.)
WASTE TO WEALTH (ABSTAINANCE)

 Soil pollution- burning of weed,


paper, nylon, etc.
 Water pollution- fertilizer,
cyanide, etc.
 Air pollution- burnings,
rottenness, decays, stench, etc.
