CHE416 ASSIGNMENT

1.
Consider a liquid phase reaction A → B in an adiabatic plug flow reactor. The feed concentration
of A is 4 kmol /m3. The density of the mixture is 1200 kg /m3 and the specific heat capacity of A
J kJ
and B is 2000 and the heat of reaction is −120 A . If maximum temperature inside
kg . K mole
the reactor is 8000 K, determine the feed temperature.

2.
The first order reaction A → B takes place in an isothermal CSTR. The feed temperature is 20 ℃
and the reactor is held at 170 ℃ by heat exchange. The coolant temperature is 40 ℃.
a) What size reactor is required to obtain 90 % conversion?
b) What heat transfer coefficient is needed if the heat transfer area is 6.13 m2?
kcal
∆ H R=−30
mol
C PA =C PB=0.15 kcal/ ( mol ∙ K )
K=0.8 h−1 ( at 170 ℃ )
C A 0=3000 mol /m3
ν o=0.2 m 3 /h
3.
The gas-phase reaction A → B + C is carried out in an adiabatic 800-L PFR. The
reaction is first-order in A and the rate constant is k = 60e (-5,000/T) s-1. The feed to the
reactor is pure A at 15 bar and 450 K with a volumetric flow rate of 1.956 L/s.   Heat of
reaction = -12 kJ/mol. Heat capacities: C PA = 40 J/mol-K, CPB = 15 J/mol-K, CPC = 25
J/mol-K. Plot the molar flow rates of A and B as a function of cumulative volume down
the reactor. Plot temperature versus volume.
