ENERGY CONSUMTION IN THE

MANUFACTURING OF PAPER
Energy used by nepalese paper industries

1. Rice husk used for generation of steam

2. Rice husk for generation of electricity

Thermal energy accounts for 82% while

electricity accounts for 18% of total
energy consumption.
Energy consumption:
requires high energy because it needs to
run mills and presses
Water consumption:
Requires water in large quantities to wash
which is done in screening and cleaning
compartment

Major steps in manufacturing

Forest-transporting logs to pulp mill-pulp mill-transporting pulp to paper mill-
paper mill
Energy required in various steps
From logs to chip
Grinders are required which provide brute
force for converting into smaller granules
From chip to pulp
The purpose of this step is to remove the
ligin that holds the wood fibers together.
The product is loose fibre in water, called
pulp.

• Removal of water
inorder to remove water from mat of randomly
interwoven fibers two process can be done
1. Thermal energy
2. Mechanical energy

Thermal dewatering(drying section)

requires more energy per removal ton of
water than mechanical dewatering and it
is therefore beneficial to remove as
much water as possible in press section
Need of electricity intensification
Reduction of consumption of thermal energy by
substitution of electrical energy
The pulp which is extracted is into the frame by
individual person can be performed by machinery
itself
The drying of paper which depend on sunlight can
be done by thermal or mechanical process
The dyeing process which is conducted individually
can be replaced by mass production by
electromechanical equipment.
Benefits of electrification
Cost per production is reduced
Dependency on fossils fued is decreased
Increase in production rate
The industry will be sustainable
Increase in quality
