Desinfeccion de Semilla
Desinfeccion de Semilla
Common Bunt
Pathogen:
Tilletia spp. (T.caries, T.foetida)
Pathogen:
Ustilago tritici (Carbón Volador)
Symptom:
Seed-borne fungal spores. The spores
germinate when seed growth begins.
Conditions:
Wheat plants are infected only during
flowering by wind blown spores from nearby smutted
heads. Rain & insects may also disseminate spores at this
time. Once the spores have been deposited, light rains or
heavy dew and moderate temperatures favour infec
Impact:
Results in complete loss of kernels on infected heads.
Spores are dispersed before harvest therefore harvested
seed quality is not affected.

Common Root Rot
Pathogen:
Cochilobolus sativus
Symptom:
Plant debris is an important source
of inoculum. Spores may remain
viable in the soil for several years.
Conditions:
Dry and warm soil conditions are important for infection.
Plants under nutritional stress are also vulnerable to
attack.
Impact:
Symptoms occur on plants scattered throughout the field.
When infection is very severe, young seedlings are killed
outright. Less severe cases weaken plants leading to
reduced yields.

Seed-Borne Fusarium
Pathogen:
Fusarium spp. (F.culmorum,
F.graminearum, F.avenaecum
Symptom:
Fungi persist and multiply in the soil and on old plant
debris. Infection can occur from emergence through to
maturity.
The pathogens are always present in the soil. Warm
and dry conditions favour infection.
Impact:
Causes death of seedlings before or soon after
emergence. Infections that extend to the crown and
root are the most damaging.

Take-All
Pathogen:
Gaeumannomyces graminis
Mal del Pié
Symptom:
Fungus lives on plant debris in the soil.
Conditions:
Favoured by cool temperatures, wet soil conditions and
alkaline or nutrient deficient soils. Most prevalent on
fields seeded to wheat 2-4 years in a row.
Impact:
When symptoms become obvious, yields can be reduced
by more than 50%.

Seed Rots
Pathogen:
Aspergillus & Penicillium spp.
spp
Symptom:
Fungi infect seed before and after
harvest, often invading the embryo.
Conditions:
Favoured by wet, cool soil conditions. Poor storage
conditions promote growth on and between seeds.
Impact:
Germination is reduced when infection penetrates seed
coat.

Pythium Damping Off
Pathogen:
Pythium spp.
Symptom:
Pythium inhabits agricultural
soils around the world and can
infect a wide range of hosts. All spring and winter
wheat is susceptible.
Conditions:
Pythium can survive in the soil and on plant residue for
5 or more years. Wheat plants deficient in phosphorus,
grown in compacted, wet soils and in continuous wheat
cropping systems are the most susceptible to damping-
off.
Impact:
Diseased plants have fewer tillers, poor root growth,
are often delayed in maturity and yield less.

Seed-Borne Septoria
Pathogen:
Septoria spp. (S.tritici, S.nodorum)
Symptom:
Overwinters on seed. More common on winter wheat.
Conditions:
Favoured by cool, wet weather.
Impact:
As a seedling disease, plant emergence and stands are
reduced.
