REVIEW
Finding the Discriminant
Step 1: Write first the equation
into standard form

Step 2: Identify the value of

a, b and c.

Step 3: Substitute these value to
b-4ac
By knowing the value of b  -4ac we
2

can discriminate among the possible

number and types of solutions of
Quadratic equation…
Remember this!

DISCRIMINANT
Answer in b2 -4ac Nature of the roots
Positive Two real solutions
Zero One real Solution
Negative Two complex but not real
solution
Example 1
Use the discriminant to determine the
number and type of solutions of x2 - 8x
STEPS +16=0 ? SOLUTION

Step 1: Get the values of a, b and c. a=1 b = -8 c = 16

Step 2: Substitute to b  -4ac

2 (-8)2  - 4(1)(16) = 0

Step 3: Remember the table of

Discriminant

Discriminant: 0 Nature of the roots: One real solution

Example 2
Use the discriminant to determine the
number and type of solutions of x2 - 4x
STEPS -1=0 ? SOLUTION

Step 1: Get the values of a, b and c. a=1 b = -4 c = 16

(-4)2  - 4(1)(-1) = 20
Step 2: Substitute to b  -4ac
2

Step 3: Remember the table of Since 20 is positive

Discriminant

Discriminant: 20 Nature of the roots: Two real solutions

Example 3
Use the discriminant to determine the
number and type of solutions of 8x2 + 5=0 ?
STEPS SOLUTION

Step 1: Get the values of a, b and c. a=8 b=0 c=5

(0)2  - 4(8)(5) = -160
Step 2: Substitute to b  -4ac
2

Step 3: Remember the table of Since -160 is negative

Discriminant

Discriminant: -160 Nature of the roots: No solution

By graphing quadratic equations, Discriminant
tells us the number of x-intercepts of f(x)=
ax2 +bx +c=0
Two real solutions No solution One real solution

f(x) has two x-intercepts f(x) has no x-intercepts f(x) has one x-intercepts
b2 -4ac > 0 b2 -4ac = 0 b2 -4ac < 0
(Positive) (Zero) (Negative)
Now that you learned about the nature
of the roots of quadratic equations, you
