Status of health
The health status is usually measured in terms of life
expectancy at birth, infant mortality rate, fertility rate,
crude birth rate and crude death rate.
The relationship between health and development is
mutually reinforcing- while health contributes to
economic development, economic development, in turn,
tends to improve the health status of the population.
It is the social sector, particularly health and education,
which is financially getting affected, among others.
The share of public expenditure as a percentage to
GDP(gross domestic product) on health and education at
higher level has been gradually declining.
Burden of disease in India
The expenditure on treatment and services was
reportedly Rs 6000 per HIV-positive person over a six-
month reference period.
The devastating impact of TB, asthma, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart
diseases, etc. on individual household is similar.
The expenditure by individuals hospitalized on
account of heart disease was roughly Rs 11,000 per
person.
Roughly Rs 32,000 is the annual cost of treatment for
acute cases of COPD that involve hospitalization.
The experts identified 17 priority health conditions which they felt
to be significant public health problems, affecting all segments of
the population.
