The role of the teacher
• The role of the teacher is to guide, facilitate
and manage high quality learning for each
student equally.
• To guide learning, teachers need to know
what they are going to teach, and how they
are going to teach it. They also need to watch
every student’s progress, to make sure that
students achieve their learning objectives.
A good teacher is able to facilitate individual
and group learning.
• They are able to interest students and
motivate them to take part actively in lessons.
• They help students understand what they are
learning by giving structure, and making
learning relevant to the students.

• To manage learning, the teacher has to plan.


Managing learning
• A teacher has to manage the classroom and make sure
that all students are working well, and are not wasting
their own time, or stopping other students working.
• Finally, good teachers are also learners.
They think about their teaching,
about what worked and what didn’t work.
They learn from their mistakes.
• To carry out this role well, and give all students high
quality learning, a teacher needs the right knowledge,
attitudes, behaviors and skills.

Teacher: Did we? Ah yes, I remember. Ok
then, page 52. Read the chapter and answer
the questions at the end.

homework of another class.
Half way through the lesson,
a student asks a question.
Student: Sir, we need to look at a map to
answer question 5.
Teacher: Do you? Mmm. You’d better leave
that question out and go on to the next one.

Identify needs
Find out student needs--
what they already know,
and how they learn best.

Identifying needs will help you plan your teaching


at the right level for your students.
Plan learning
As a facilitator,
Planning provides a structure.
As a guide, you need to know where you are going.
what subject content you are going to teach
at the level of your students.
how to teach the subject.
design an outline plan of the whole course.
plan each lesson in the course.
- planning includes designing learning activities and
summary handouts for your students.
Teach
Have clear learning objectives
at the right level for the students.
Use a variety of Teaching and learning activities;
manage learning in the classroom
(to make learning interesting and motivate
students.)
A variety of approaches –
help students with different learning styles and
skills.
Assess learning
Assessment helps-
T: how well the students understand their
learning.
S: how they are doing
Assessment does not always mean tests and
exams.
E.g. Giving feedback to students is a kind of
assessment
Evaluate teaching
A teacher needs to know
how successful their teaching is,
and learn from the things that go well,
and also the things that don’t go so well.
--look at student assessment results to see
how they are progressing towards their learning
objectives.
Evaluation helps you identify students’ needs for
the next cycle of learning.
Self-evaluation

Design a checklist that a teacher could use to


evaluate their teaching after any class.
e.g.
ask ourselves to evaluate our teaching-
• all students were interested in the lesson
• there was a variety of different learning
activities.
