Teacher skills and knowledge 1. DISCUSSION - What do teachers expect from their students? - What do students expect from their teachers? 2. WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER? Make a list of the different factors which make you recognize a good teacher. 2. WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER? 2.1. A list of the different factors will probably include: - They knew their subject well. - They understood what you already knew and what you still had to learn. - They wanted you to do well. - They made their lesson enjoyable. - They covered a lot of material but always made sure that you understood it before starting something new. 2. WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER? 2.2. Some factors about your good teachers that you probably did not know at the time: - They probably did a lot of work before coming to the classroom. - They probably discussed your progress as a class with the other teachers. - They probably kept good records. 2. WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER? 2.3. The qualities of a good teacher - A good teacher knows what to teach (that is, the subject matter) - A good teacher knows a variety of effective teaching methods (that is, the methodology of teaching) - A good teacher is “on the side of the pupils”, knowing their strengths and weaknesses and always helping them to improve. 2. WHAT MAKES A GOOD TEACHER? - Knowing your subject - Understanding what pupils know and do not know - Wanting pupils to do well - Making lesson enjoyable - Having high expectations - Bridging the gap 3. WHAT IS GOOD TEACHING? - The teaching job is to help learner to learn. this relates to both the formal classroom process and learning outside the classroom. - Teachers are responsible for: what is taught; the resources used; the type and order of activities; class management; assessment; feedback and correction. - Teachers are responsible for: encouraging learners to take their responsibility. 4. HOW IS AN EFFECTIVE TEACHER? - Understands learners’ language needs and responds to them positively. - Designs lessons which reflects the learners’ needs and develop their communicative skills. - Monitors and corrects sensitively. - Provides feedback and encouragement whe appropriate. - Tells learners not to worry about making mistakes. - Encourages good learning habits inside or outside the classroom. - Keeps track of progress, gaps in learners’ ability and repeated errors. - Creates an input rich environment in the classroom. - Encourages learners to read. 5. MAKING RAPPORT? 5.1. What is rapport? The relationship that the Ss have with the teacher, and vice versa. Teachers should show their empathy with the students, treat them with respect, create relaxed atmosphere in the class. 5. MAKING RAPPORT? 5.2. Common positive effects of rapport - Increased enjoyment of the teacher and subject matter. - Motivation to attend class more often. - Motivation to pay more attention in class. 5. MAKING RAPPORT? - Showing personal interest in the Ss Both inside and outside the classroom, find out their opinion, their attitude, and their day-to-day life. Also, refer occasionally to somthing you know about individual students in the class. - Being interested in their progress Talk to Ss informally to know: what they think they need to learn; what they think their good points and weak points; what difficulties they have and why they are having them. - Having the right manner / respecting Ss Showing a sense of humour; being relaxed and helpful; getting away with being rude to the students; showing sympathy with the students. 5. MAKING RAPPORT? - Listening to Ss and responding and reacting to what students say + Listen to the student carefully to understand what they say and give appropriate response + React properly to Ss’ behaviour 6. TEACHER TASKS 6.1. Preparation. Effective teachers are well-prepared - Preparation resides in the knowledge of the subject - Being well-prepared by thinking in advance of what they are going to do in their lessons and what the Ss are going to achieve. - They should have some learning outcomes 6. Keeping records. - There is a good reason for keeping of what has been taught in order to look back at what has been done and decided what to do next. - Keeping records of how well things has gone to know what works and what doesn’t and evaluate of class activities for improvement. - Reflection on teaching experiences helps teachers to change. 6. TEACHER TASKS 6.3. Being reliable. - Professional teachers are reliable about things like timekeeping and homework. - Being reliable in this way is a simple a matter of following the old idiom of “practising what we preach” 7. TEACHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE * TEACHER SKILLS 7.1. Managing classes. Effective teachers see classroom management as a separate aspect of their skill. - Teacher has to think of and carry out procedures that make activities successful. - Teacher should know how to put Ss in groups, when to start and finish an activity, what kinds of instryctions to give, what order to do things in. - Teacher should decide whether Ss should work in groups / pairs / a whole class. - Good classroom management helps to prevent disruptive / disorder behavior and react to it effectively when it occurs. 7. TEACHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE 7.2. Matching tasks and groups. - Students have a range of needs and interests. Therefore, teacher should match activities to different group they teach. Some groups seem happy to work creatively on their own, others need more help and guidance. - When Ss respond well to teacher presentation, others are much happier when they investigate language issues on gtheir own. 7. TEACHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE 7.3. Variety. - Good teachers vary activities and topic over a period of time. - Even where we use the same activities types for some reasons, they ensure that Learner roles are not always the same. - Using language Drills for Ss, Teacher can not keep a drill running over an half hour because it will exhaust both Ss and teacher. 7. TEACHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE 7.4. Destinations. - Good activities should have some kind of destination or learning outcomes. Teacher should make this destination apparent. - Feedback sessions at the end of a discussion is so valuable. 7. TEACHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE * TEACHER KNOWLEDGE - Teacher need to know a lot about the subject they are teaching, materials for T and Ss, equipments... a. Knowledge of language system: - Knowledge of grammar system / lexical system / sounds / stress / intonation. b. Materials and resources - Good teachers know where to find the answers / books / websites 7. TEACHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE * TEACHER KNOWLEDGE c. Classroom equipment - Pen, board, tape recorder, laboratory, projector, computer, podcasts d. Keeping up to date - reading teachers’ magazines, journals, information about teaching o the internet, attending seminars, workshops and teachers; conferences, listening to colleagues sharing experiences and successes they have had.
