Types of employment
1. Full-time employment-This is where a business takes on an
employee who is expected to work the full working week-
usually five days.
2. Part-time employment-Workers will work few hours than full-
time colleagues. There is no specific numbeer but it might be
less than 30 hours.
Advantages ot businesses
• Gives them flexibility
• Businesses can stay open for longer hours
3. Job share-This is where two part-time workers share the work
and pay of single full-time post
Types of employment
Advantages
• Suit employees who want to reduce their work hours
• Ideas and enthusiasm of two people is better than one.
• Better motivated and less stressed as they have a choice on
how to work
Other types of employment
1. Casual employment-casual workers do not get any guarantees
of work from their employer. Their hours of work are often
variable and uncertain.
Advantages
• Provides greater flexibility for businesses

Disadvantage
• Workers may lack the commitment of their full-time or part-
time colleagues.
2. Seasonal employment-some businesses need workers at a
particular times of the year.The work is regular and full time
but short lived.
Advantages
• Provides businesses flexibility as workers are laid off when the
seasons ends.
• some prefer as it suits their lifestyle

3. Temporary employment-sometimes businesses need to take


on staff for a short period of time to cover for absent workers,
for example, such as those on paternity leave or long-term
sickness.
• Temporary work might be taken by job seekers to earn some
income while they look for a permanent post.
• Also , temporary post might provide a doorway into
permanent job
Recruitment
A business may need new staff because:
• The business is expanding and more labour is needed
• Positions have become vacant owing to promotion
• People are required for a temporary period to cover
staff absence owing to maternity leave or paternity
leave.
Stages of job recruitment
• Identify the type and number of staff needed
• Prepare a job description and person specification
• Advertise using appropriate media
• Evaluate applicants and select a shortlist for
interview
• Provide feedback for unsuccessful applicants
• Carry out interviews.
• Evaluate interviews and appoint the best candidate
Recruitment documents
1. Job description-It states the title of the job and outlines the
tasks, duties and responsibilities associated with that job
Use/Purpose
• Show clearly what is expected of the employee
• Extracts are likely to be used in a job advert
• It can be used during appraisal
2. Person specification-it provides details of the
qualifications,experience, skills, attitudes and any other
characteristics that would be expected of a person appointed
to do a particular job.

3. Application form
Advantage
• It ensures the same data is collected from each applicant,
which makes comparisons between them easier
Information contained in application form include:
• full name and address and other contact details
• personal or tax identification numbers such as a national
insurance number
• Details of education
• employment history

• A statement from the applicant
• hobbies and interest
• names and adddress of referees
• a declaration of any health issues that might impede the
fulfilment of an applicant
4. Curriculum vitae (CV) or Resume-it contains most of the
information in a job application form but it is produced by the
job seekers and is therefore,personalised.
External and internal recruitment
Internal Recruitment
• Looks to fill the vacancy from within its existing work force
Advantages
• cheaper and quicker
• people already familiar with business
• provides opportunities for promotion, motivating
• knows strengths and weaknesses of candidates
Disadvantages
• limits the number of potential applicants
• no new ideas introduces
External and internal recruitment
• resentment amongst candidates no appointed
• creates another vacancy to be filled

• Looks to fill the vacancy from any suitable applicant outside
the business
Advantages
• bring in new ideas, wider range of experience
• larger pool of workers from which to find the best candidate

Disadvantages
• more expensive longer process, advertising and interviews
• selection process may not be effective enough to reveal best
candidate

Objectives Of Job Advertisement
• inform audience of potential candidates about opportunity
• provide information to inform and interest applicants
• help stop unsuitable applicants
• obtain suitably qualifies applicants

• job title, name, address, email and telephone number of
employer, brief details of the job description
• skills, qualifications and work experience required for the job
• salary and other benefits and method of application
Shortlisting
• Once th deadline has been reached for receiving
application forms, the next stage in the recruitment
process is to select a small group of candidates for
interviewing-this is called shortlisting.
• This involves sorting through all the application
forms or CVs and choosing those applicants match
the person specification.

For Employer:
• Help get extra detail and information
• determine the communication skills of the interviewee
• assess the personality, motivation and attitude
• Determine the reactions of interviewee when under pressure
• Help clarify information on the application form(or CV)

• Seek to know if the job/business right for them
• Assess the culture of business is like
• Get exact details of job
Employment Contract
• Legal document describing obligations of employee and
employer to each other.
