The nature of communication
Communication is
about sending and
receiving
information which
begins with the
sender to the
receiver. Finally, a
feedback from
receiver who
becomes also a
sender.
How does communication takes
place
• Inside a business,
messages can be passed
vertically (upwards or
downwards) and
horizontally (from side to
side).Theseroutes are
called communication
channels

Communication channels
1. Downward communication passing messages from
the top of the organisation to those at the bottom
Note: Why is downward communication important?
 Surbodinates look to their managers for leadership
and guidance
 It allows the decisions made by management to be
carried out by employees
 It allows managers to command, control and
organise.

of an organisation to those at the top.
Note: Why is Upward communication important?
 Helps managers to understand the views and needs of
surbodinates
 May make managers aware of problems
 Helps staff to feel that they are valued
 Provides managers with information to help make decisions.
3. Horizontal communication exchange of information between
parties on the same level in an organisation's hierarchy

Face to face communication
• Examples include: Interview, training, customer service at the reception,
presentation to investors.
Advantages
• Allows immediate feedback
• Encourages cooperation
• Allows new ideas to be generated
• Saves time
Disadvantages
• Negative body language may create a barrier
• A record of the message may not be kept
• No-relevant information may be included
• In meeting, some people may not listen
Written communication

Advantages
• They are flexible
• Can be used for private information
• Provide record of the communication
Disadvantages
• Takes time to write
• If hand written some employees may have poor written skills
2. Reports- They take time to research and write
3. Memorandums-They contain brief messages are flexible
4. Forms-They may be inflexible and can become out of date
5. Noticeboards-They are cheap to use and can pass on information to large
number.However, they can become untidy, are open to abuseand are
often overlooked.
Electronic communication
1. Email-Allows communication by sending text or images instantly via a
computer. However, they might be ignored

3. Mobile phones-They are cheap and can be used for sending short memos.
