Looking Back …
 Kelowna was initially chosen due to it’s
location
Low lease rates
Center of sporting activity.
 Initially performed well under Samantha
Abbot.
 November,2005 : Problem started after
Abbot quit.
 Since May, 2007 : Looking for a store
manager.
Issues in hand
 Under performing
 Management turnover
 Poor sales revenue
 Store run by inexperienced people
 Time in hand was less
Real Issues
 Poor recruiting policies
 Below par compensation
 Unrealistic goals
 Improper employee feedback
 Lack of a ‘leader’
 Lack of motivation among the
employees
Using the Motivation theories
 Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Applying it ….
 Physiological Needs : Provide lunch
breaks, rest breaks.
 Safety needs : Retirement benefits
 Social Needs : Clubs for employees
 Esteem Needs : Recognize
achievements.
 Self-actualization needs : Provide
challenges and the opportunity to reach
their full career potential
Theory X and Theory Y
 Theory X assumes people work only for
lower order needs (Money and Security)
Hard Way – Close supervision, threats
Soft Way – Permissive
A middle path.
 In theory Y, people are more influenced
by higher order needs and gradually
aligns his goals to organization goals.
Herzberg’s Motivational Theory
Applying it …
 Motivation-Hygiene ::Internal-
External::Satisfaction-Dissatisfaction
 Company Policy Change
 Salary
 Growth/Advancement
 Recognition
Goal Setting theory (sales and performance goals)

 Clarity and Challenge

Goals should be productive, clear cut,
measurable and a clear deadline.
 Commitment
Harder goals, more commitment , draw
inspiration
 Feedback
To check progress, problems faced, whether in
correct direction , etc
 Task Complexity
Not too complicated task, enough time to
achieve the task.
Equity Theory
Applying it …
 The store was suffering from inequity.
Part-time v/s full-time employees – almost
same ; needs more differentiation
Store managers did not have any
compensation – Allow compensation
Compensation was below industry
standards – Improve it
Expectancy Theory
Applying it …
 Defined by Expectancy probability X
Instrumentality probability X Valence
 Effort-performance relationship
 Performance-reward relationship
 Rewards-personal goals relationship
 Awards like highest sales, etc.
 Effort should be recognized
 Recruiting more full-time employees
Store manager’s position: A dilemma

 Temporary solution : A senior manager

should see through the difficult time.
 Permanent solution : A proper
recruitment process should be followed
and a competent manager should be
hired.
Further suggestions
 Flawed recruiting/HR policies
Proper background check should be done
Minimum Educational Qualification for each
post
Promotion policy should be changed
 Proper training for employees
