DEFINING RELATIVE

CLAUSES
Lic. Moreno Fiori
USE:
Relative clauses give us information about the person or thing
mentioned.

Defining relative clauses give us essential information – information

that tells us who or what we are talking about.

The clause goes immediately after the noun it describes.

E.g.
“Dogs that like cats are very unusual”

Explanation:
There are many dogs in
the world, but we are
only talking about the
ones that like cats.

*Defining relative clause

use a relative pronoun.
Who [people]

Which [places, animals, things]

Whose [people] * possessives

that [people, animal, things]

When [time]

 He is the man who / that owns this car.

 The computer which we bought is very expensive.
 The girl whose party I went to phoned me
 This is the house where I was born.
