Who, whom and whose

WHO : subject or object pronoun for


people.

E.g1: I told you about the woman who lives


next door.
E.g2: The girl who you saw at the concert is
John’s sister.
Who, whom and whose (cont)
WHOM:
# object pronoun for people, especially in
non-defining relative clauses (in defining
relative clauses we colloquially prefer who)

E.g: The boy whom we are looking for is Tom.


# the object of a preposition is usually left out:
E.g: The boy we are looking for is Tom
# the object of a preposition is usually left
out:
E.g: The boy whom we are looking for is
Tom.
 The boy we are looking for is Tom.
WHOSE: possession for people, animals
and things.

E.g : 1,The boy whose bicycle you


borrowed yesterday is Tom.  people.

2, John found a cat whose leg was broken.

Insteadof “whose”, we can use “of
which”, but this is less formal than
“whose”.

E.g: He has written a book whose name


I’ve forgotten.
 He has written a book the name of
which I’ve forgotten.
