• Gasification is a thermo-chemical process in which,
biomass is thermally degraded with restricted amount of air/ oxygen up to 900°C to yield a mixture of combustible gases consisting of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and traces of methane called producer gas. • The reactor where the gasification takes place is called as gasifier. • The producer gas can be used for both thermal and power applications. GASIFIER UNIT Lab scale Gasifier unit Working Procedure
1. Performance of the gasifier by water boiling method.
2. Assemble the gasifier system with burner. 3. Thermocouples (1200°C) are fixed in drying zone, pyrolysis zone, reduction zone and oxidation zone to measure the zone temperatures. 4. Place a known quantity of charcoal in the gasifier and ignite it. 5. After the charcoal becomes red hot, load the briquettes / biomass through the top opening of the gasifier and cover with lid. 6. Use blower to supply required quantity of air. 7. Once the gas composition is favorable for combustion, the gas will burn in the flare. 8. Once the flame is stabilized in the burner, remove the torch. 9. Periodically load the feed stock for continuous generation of producer gas. 10. While stopping the gasifier, the following procedure has to be adapted. i. Allow the gas to burn as long as the gas induced for briquettes ii. Shut down the blower to cut the oxygen supply. iii. Open the gasifier bottom lid and discharge the ash, burnt feedstock and charcoal after sufficient cooling. Observation
