KIDNEY FUNCTION
- Removes organic waste
- Regulation of the concentration of important ions
- Regulation of red blood cell production
- Adjustment of acid-base balance
- Blood pressure regulation
- Release of toxic substances
 Humans have a pair of kidneys that are located at the back
of the stomach or abdomen. These kidneys are located on
the right and left of the spine, under the liver and spleen. At
the top (superior) part of the kidneys are the adrenal glands
(also called the suprarenal glands).
 The kidneys are retroperitoneal, which means they lie
behind the peritoneum that lines the abdominal cavity. The
two kidneys are located around the vertebrae T12 to L3. The
right kidney is usually located slightly below the left to
make room for the liver.
 The upper part of the kidney is protected by the eleventh and
twelfth ribs. Both kidneys are covered by two layers of fat
(perirenal fat and pararenal fat) which help absorb shock.
