INTRODUCTION
 Famous and sacred Hindu temple complex
 Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites 's

list in 1979
 collection of temples, ashrams, images and
inscriptions raised over the centuries along the
banks of the sacred Bagmati river
HISTORY
 Built by King Supuspa Dev
 Rebuilt by Ananada Malla in 879 AD; rebuilt the roofs
and lined them in gold
 In 1349,Shams-uddin broke the linga
 In 1360, new linga was consecrated by Jayasimharam
of Banepa.
 Mahindra Malla made the temple three tiered in 1572
 Was reduced into two tiers in Malla period 1600
 Last reconstruction was was done in 1702 AD
 Renovated many times by King Mahendra and King
Birendra

THE DEITY

 The sacro sanctum, or the main


idol is a stone Mukhalinga with a
silver yoni base bound with the
silver serpent.
 The lingam is one metre high and
has faced in four directions
 These faces represent various
aspects of Shiva;
 Facing West, North, East, South
and Zenith respectively
representing five primary
elements namely earth, water,
air, light and ether.[
 Each face has tiny protruding
hands holding rudraksha mala on
right hand and a kamandalu on
the other.
ENTRY AND DARSHAN
 
 The temple courtyard
has 4 entrances in the
cardinal directions.
 The western
entrance is the main
entrance to the
temple courtyard
 The remaining three
entrances are only
opened during festival
times.
DIFFERENT STYLES OF
TEMPLES IN PASHUPATINATH
 PAGODA STYLE
 Main temple of
Pashupatinath is made in
Pagoda style
 During the Malla
regime, Pagoda style
temples were profoundly
constructed
 In the east it is
called Mandapa Shaili,
roof on top of roof
DOME STYLE:
 Domed temples were
influenced by Mughal
architecture
 Were introduced during
the Malla period

 Vishwaroop at Pashupati
constructed by Jung
Bahadur Rana in 1874 is
a dome-styled temple.
SHIKHARA STYLE:

 The Shikhara temple style 


was initially introduced by
the Guptas in the 6th
century.
 Later introduced by the
Lichhavi dynasty and
continued.
 Was used for both Hindu as
well as Buddhist temples
 Consist of square-cell with
tapering tower, symbolizing
caves and mountains
 Ram Mandir outside the
Pashupati courtyard is an
example os such style.
CONCLUSION
 Sacred and famous Hindu temple
 Inscribed in UNESCO world heritage site in
1979
 Of Religious and Architectural significance
 Shikhara style,Pagoda style and Dome style
can be seen
 Necessary to preserve and promote our
heritage
