Jang –Hiranya Hemnarayan

temple, Kalmochan
• Also known as: Lakshmi Narayan
Temple, Kal Mochan Ghat.
• Established:Built on 1874 A.D by
instruction of then Prime minister
Jung Bahadur Rana who named it
after his two wives “Hiranya” and
“Hem” whereas “Narayan” means
God Bishnu.
• Dedicated:Dedicated to the Hindu
God Lord Vishnu. This temple was a
part of the Thapathali Durbar
complex.
• Renovated:on 1936 A.D
• Current situation :
Earthquake of 7.5M HIT
Nepal on april 25, 2015 A.D
which completely destroyed.

• Size: 80 ropanis
History
• It was built around the mid-19th century
• It was built in the Moghul-Gothic architecture
style and has Mughal art and Nepali art in
combined.
• It was built by Rana prime minister Jung
Bahadur Rana, he named it after his two
wives Hiranya Garbha and Hem, whereas
Narayan means god Bishnu.
• He built this temple to attain inner peace
(mochan) as he was involved in many
murders, it is believed that Jung Bahadur
Rana had buried the dead bodies of people
who died in Kot (Arsenal) Parva (massacre)
under this temple.
• Thapathali Durbar was a palace complex in Kathmandu,
“Thapathali” means abode of the Thapas.
• The palace complex, located north of the Bagmati river,
encompasses an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens,
and buildings.
• Many palaces and buildings were built throughout late 1840s to
1900, initially by Nain Singh Thapa, a member of the aristocratic
Thapa family and brother of Bhimsen Thapa, and later was
acquired by Nain Singh Thapa's grandson Jung Bahadur Rana.
Further additions were made by successive Ranas up to the 19th
century.

Architectural form
• The palaces maintained scale which
dominated the human proportions, and
stood almost at the centre of the vast
expanse of the landscaped areas, adding
to much of its grandeur and
monumentality.

Material used
• Major characteristic is white
plaster. Traditional mortar and
white plaster, along with bricks,
were used in construction
• The wall is edged by pilasters.

neck that has black-on-white-lotus
petals design arount it.
• The dome is capped by a fluted bajra.
• Topped with a gilded finial with the
naga chhatra.

architectural expression where,
• The exposed brick slopped roof architecture of the mall
Dynesty was shifted to white stucco plaster with
imported architectural style .
• Thus, kalmochan temples also stands an one of them
carrying our history, religion and our identity .
