SAFETY PLANNING FOR ACCIDENT
PREVENTION

 Definition of “ACCIDENT”
 In Industry the word “ACCIDENT” means an event
take place at the work premises, during the course of
activity, which is unplanned & unexpected.

 There are UNSAFE ACTS & UNSAFE CONDITIONS

committed and prevailing without the effect of which
an accident can not occur.
3
UNSAFE ACTS

 Un-authorization Operation of equipment

 Horseplay or non-work related activity

 Not using personal protective equipment

 Improper position of task

 Improper lifting technique

 Not covering machine rotating parts

 Improper techniques / work method

4
UNSAFE CONDITIONS

 Inadequate guards and barriers

 Inadequate access to work area

 Congested or restricted work place

 Inadequate / improper protective equipment

 Defective tools, equipment in use

 Poor house keeping, poor illumination

 Temperature Extremes & high noise

5
TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY

 Work above ground

 Work in open excavation or Quarry Operation

 Under Ground Work

 Work in Water (Marine Operation)

6
SAFETY MANAGEMENT

 Safety Planning for accident prevention

 Job Hazard Analysis

 Training & Motivation

7
EXCAVATION
 Every Side of the excavated pit shall be sloped to the
angle of repose of the soil at minimum excavation is 2
meter.
 Barricade every side of the excavated area and provide
caution board for easy identification in day time.

8
EXCAVATION
 Wherever sloping is not possible, side should be
protected by providing shoring.
 Underground utilities such as pipeline, cable shall be
located and protected during the excavation means
work permit shall be taken
 Adequate provision shall be made to get in and out
of an excavated pit safely
 Provide adequate general illumination
 Never allow under cutting

9
EXCAVATION
 Do not dump the excavated earth within 1.50 m or
half the depth of the pit; from the edge of the pit
 Do not stack any material on the edge of the
excavated pit
 All excavation walls should b inspected before
entering & after a heavy rain
 No one is permitted in an excavation while
equipment is working near to the edge
 Do not allow vehicle movement nearby
 Excavated material shall be kept one meter away
from the excavated edge.
10
EXCAVATION

 Barricading shall be provided to excavated

pits, trenches etc
 Fixing reflective glow sign board at
excavation area for night time.
 Barricading is of two types

 A. Soft Barricading :It shall be 02 meters

away from the excavated edge
 B. Hard Barricading :It shall be one meter
away from the excavated edge. 11
WORKING AT
HEIGHT
 Safe means of access
should be ensured for
working at height.
 Ladders should be
placed at level base &
extend to a maximum
of 1.5m above the
working platform
level.

 Safe Platform
should be ensured
for working at
height

13
WORKING AT HEIGHT

 Use safety Belt ,

Safety Helmet &
Safety Shoes while Safety Helmet
working at height

WORKING AT HEIGHT
 While any job executed at a height of 2m above or
below the ground level , it is called as height work.
 Ensure that workmen working height are medically
fit
 Obtain height work permit for working at height
 Do not drop material from height
 Do not keep loose material on the platform
 Do not allow two jobs, one above and other
simultaneously
 Do not use portable ladder as platform or platform
support
15
WORKING AT HEIGHT
 Always use a full body safety belt & tie off the belt
hook when working at a height.
 Ensure that underneath area are clear off all
unnecessary materials.
 Barricading the height work area to avoid object
falling from height on workers.
 Good housekeeping shall be maintained to help
prevent slipping, tripping and falls.
 Every ladder should be of good construction, sound
material & adequate strength.
 Use a tool box or a bag to carry or to keep the tools
while climbing a ladder or working at height.

WORKING ON SCAFFOLDING

 Use tubular metallic scaffolds Railing

of standard design & strength Tubular

 Provide guard rail and toe Metallic

 Provide lateral support to Lateral

scaffold if the height is more Support
than 3 times its base or width

WORKING ON SCAFFOLDING
 Engineer in charge of the work should ensure stability of
the scaffold after erection.
 Planks used for working platform on scaffold shall be
rigidly tied at both end.
 Use appropriate ladder to climb up on the scaffold
 Scaffold should not be used for storing of materials
 Do not use scrap wood / packing wood as scaffolding
planks

19
WORKING ON SCAFFOLDING
 Climbing on scaffold braces, runners etc is not permitted,
except as required by scaffolder during scaffold erection,
alteration & dismantling.
 Use fall arrestor while erection the scaffold.
 Do not allow more than one person on a ladder/scaffold
platform unless it is designed for more than one person.
Remove ladder or temporary scaffolding as soon as the
job completed.
