Lesson 11: The Sanctity of Human Life
As a Gift
“you have granted me life and steadfast love; and your
has preserved my spirit” (Job 10:12)
“everyone is responsible for his life before God who has
given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign
Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and
preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls.
We are Stewards, not owners, of the life God has
entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of” (CCC, 2280).
Lesson 11: The Sanctity of Human Life
As Sacred
“God created man in his own image and likeness” (Gen. 1:27).
“every human life, from the moment of conception until
death, is sacred because the human person has been willed for
his own sake from the image and likeness of the living and
holy God” (CCC, 2319).
“human life is sacred because from its beginning, it involves
the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special
relationship with the creator, who is its sole end. God alone is
the Lord of life from its beginning until its end” (CCC, 2258).
Lesson 11: The Sanctity of Human Life
As Sacred
 “is not a ‘private’ possession, but is created, sustained and
guided now by the creative, saving will and love of Almighty
God” (CFC, 314).
 “might have life, and have it to the full” (Jn. 10:10).
 “Let us then, all together, renew our esteem for that value of
human life, remembering also that, through Christ, all
human life has been redeemed” (Pope John Paul II,
Washington, DC, 1979).
Lesson 11: The Sanctity of Human Life
As Inviolable
“every human being, even a child in the mother’s womb,
has the right to life directly from God and not from the
parents or from any human activity. Hence there is no
human authority, no science, no medical, eugenic, social
economic or moral ‘indication’ that can offer or produce
a valid juridical title to a direct, deliberate disposal of an
innocent life” (Pope Pius XII, October 29, 1951).
“the basis for the extraordinary value of human life is
God. He is the Lord and Giver of Life, in whom ‘we live
and move and have our being’” (Acts 17:28) (CFC, 1028).
Lesson 11: The Sanctity of Human Life
