GEOGRAPHY

LOCATION
• Lithuania is in Northern Europe, the
largest of the three Baltic states.
According to some geographers, the
geographical midpoint of Europe is just
north of Lithuania‘s capital. Situated on
the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea and
borders Latvia, Belarus, Poland and the
Kaliningrad region of Russia.
TOPOGRAPHY

• Lithuania's terrain is an alternation of


moderate lowlands and highlands.
The highest elevation is 940 feet above
sea level and is separated from the
uplands of the western region
of Samogitia by the fertile plains.
DRAINAGE

• The landscape is punctuated by 2,833


lakes. Lithuania also has 758 rivers
longer than ten kilometres. The largest
river is the Nemunas, followed by
Neris, Venta and Šešupė. Out of 1200
miles of rivers, only 400 miles are
navigable.
FORESTS

• Once a heavily forested land,


Lithuania's territory today
consists of only 32.8
percent woodlands—
primarily pine, spruce,
and birch forests. The forests are
rich in mushrooms and berries,
as well as a variety of plants.
SHORELINE

• Lithuania has 108 kilometres


of Baltic seashore with an ice-
free harbor at Klaipėda. The
Baltic coast offers sandy
beaches, pine forests and
amazing views.
