A ball is dropped and string

is pressured up to set the

packer
Pressure up on string, so
that piston pushes down
on the packer.
At the same time pull on
the string so that the
combined piston force
and pulling force will
release MPW tool from
upper packer
Pick up MPW tool several
feet so that crossover
port is exposed to the
annulus
Pressure up on string to shear
ball seat on MPW tool.
Then slack off on MPW
tool so that it goes back
to Squeeze/Circulate
position
Pump sand.
Sand goes through the
tubing and gets diverted
by the crossover port to
the annulus in between
the casing and screens
When the Sand/water slurry is
being pumped down, the sand is
prevented from entering the wash
pipe (because its being filtered by
the screen)
But clean water can get through
the screens and returns to the
annulus through the wash pipe

Wash pipe
Red arrow = Sand Slurry
Blue arrow = “Clean Brine”
When the MPW tool is
being pulled from the
Gravel pack assembly,
the shifting tool (grey in
colour) will grab the
closing sleeve (red) to
close up the “Closing
Sleeve”
Can you see the shifting
tool has grabbed the
closing sleeve to shift it
close
The closing sleeve has to
be closed so that sand
does not enter the inside
of the GP assembly
through the Closing sleeve
port.
