DESCRIPTION/APPLICATION:
The “POTV” is an annular pressure operated downhole ball valve run with
a nitrogen section to compensate for changes in annular hydrostatic
pressure. The “POTV” is designed to work in conjunction with both
retrievable and permanent packers as no set-down weight is required
when operating. An optional lock-open system allows the ball to be
retained open every second cycle. This lock-open feature allows the
“POTV” to act as a fluid bypass when placing seals in a packer bore and
aids in wireline work and well killing procedures. The ball valve incorporates
a metal-to-metal seal which eliminates unloading across elastomers.
OPERATION:
The “POTV” is run above the packer and recorder carriers in a cased hole
test string. When the test assembly is run to depth and the packer is set,
applied annulus pressure causes the ball valve to rotate to the open
position, allowing full bore passage through the tool. It remains open until
the pressure is bled off.
When using the optional lock open feature, the “POTV” will remain open
on alternative cycles when applied annulus pressure is relieved. When the
“POTV” is cycled to the closed position, the workstring may be tested as
many times as desired.
