Active learning
Active learning derives from the
assumptions that learning is an active
endeavour and that individuals learn in
different ways. However, it is important to
note that active learning alone will not
increase student learning, in the absence of
content, reflection, or objectives
Why is Active Learning Important?
Active learning encourages students
to think more deeply about the
material, that is, in a more
meaningful way, it is effective in
improving students’ learning.
• To help students see the relevance and importance
of the information, and
• To make it understandable
As we move from basic knowledge to the complex
organization and hierarchies of information in the
disciplines, we parallel the levels of Bloom's
cognitive taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension,
application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
What are the Barriers to Active
Learning?
Barriers fall into three categories:
1. Student characteristics or
attributes
• Class Discussions
• Visual-based instruction
• Content-based questions
• Case studies
• Ticket-in technique
How to incorporate active learning
into eLearning?
Below are the few techniques for active learning to
incorporated into an e-learning
• Generating ideas and connections
• Integrating prior knowledge
• Retrieving from memory
• Active studying
Generating ideas and
connections
Students should be asked to frequently generate
connections, questions, and ideas. One of the
strongest findings in the learning sciences is that
memory and understanding of information is
greater if a learner attempts to produce or generate
information rather exclusively receiving it from an
instructor or textbook.
Integrating prior
knowledge
• Learners need to dedicate time to reflecting on new
information and integrating it with pre-existing
knowledge. Students come to an instructional situation
with a robust network of prior beliefs, skills, and
experiences that influence and moderate their efforts to
construct the personally meaningful relationships
required for enduring knowledge.
Retrieving from memory
• Perhaps the most well-established active
learning strategy is repeated and spaced
retrieval of learned information. Effortful
recollection of information through
recurrent testing, even if such attempts to
retrieve information are unsuccessful, is a
powerful learning event for improving
long-term retention.
Active studying
Knowledge of active learning strategies is necessary for students to
maximize their personal studying efforts. Methods suggested include
• Frequent self-questioning while reading a textbook or listening to
lectures.
• Elaborating on encountered material by considering how it relates
to other ideas or knowledge,
• Using flashcards to practice retrieval over extended periods of time,
• Demonstrations
• Think-pair-share
