Clearing the work area
1S Sort - Seiri Any work area should only have the items needed to perform
the work in the area. All other items should be cleared
(sorted out) from the work area.

Designating location
Set in Order - Seiton Everything in the work area should have
2S
a place and everything should be in its place.

Cleanliness & workplace appearance

Shine - Seiso Not only should the work area be clear, it should

5S
also be clean. Cleanliness involves housekeeping
3S efforts, improving the appearance of the work area,
and even more importantly, preventive house-

PROGRAM
keeping keeping the work area from getting dirty,
-rather than just cleaning it up after it becomes dirty.

Everyone doing things the same way

Standardize - Seiketsu Everyone in the work area and in the organization must be
4S involved in the 5S effort, creating best practices and then
getting everyone to "copy" those best practices the same way,
everywhere, and every time. Work area layouts and storage
techniques should be standardized wherever possible.
Standard activities, procedures, schedules and the persons
responsible for helping keep the work place clean and organized.

Ingraining the 5S's into the culture

Sustain - Shitsuke It's tough to keep a 5S effort, or any improvement effort for that matter,
5S going. The 5S's involve a culture change. And to achieve a culture
change, it has to be ingrained into the organization - by everyone at all
levels in the organization. Drive the organization to be disciplined in
maintaining these new standards and procedures and in continuously
improving the state of the workplace
 1S BENEFITS
Creation of extra work space

Safety improvements

Productivity improves

Work flow becomes more visible

It is a better place to work

Quality improves
 2S BENEFITS
Eliminates the need to search for tools and supplies

Safety is improved with organized work places

Improved Productivity

Less waste of motion (tools & supplies are located where needed at point of
use)
 3S BENEFITS
Cleaner and more satisfying place to work

Quality improvement

Safer place to work (fewer accidents)

 4S BENEFITS
Without standardize, improvements made with the first three disciplines would
soon be lost as new employees are hired, people forget, etc.

Standardize ensures Sort, Set, and Shine are maintained in their fully
implemented state
