PALAZZO BARBERINI

Palazzo Barberini is a palace in

Rome, facing the piazza of the
same name in Rione Trevi and is
home to the Galleria Nazionale
d'Arte Antica.

Three great architects worked to

create the Palazzo, each
contributing his own style and
character to the building. They
were namely
•Carlo Maderno
•Francesco Borromini
•Gian Lorenzo Bernini
PALAZZO BARBERINI
The palazzo is disposed around a forecourt
centered on Bernini's grand two-storey hall
backed by an oval salone, with an extended
wing dominating the piazza

The main block presents three tiers of great

arch-headed windows, like glazed arcades,
a formula that was more Venetian than
Roman.

Borromini's windows are set in a false

perspective that suggests extra depth, a
feature that has been copied into the
20th century.
SANTA BIBANA
Santa Bibiana is a small church in
Rome, devoted to St Bibiana.

The present facade was designed

and built by then 26 year old Gian
Lorenzo Bernini in 1624-1626, as
commissioned by Pope Urban VIII.
The columns lining the nave are
from the original 5th century
church.

The church houses a statue of the

titular saint, also by Bernini (1626).
SANT'ANDREA AL QUIRINALE
The Church of Saint Andrew's at the
Quirinal (Italian: Sant'Andrea al
Quirinale, Latin: S. Andreae in Quirinali) is
a Roman Catholic titular church in Rome,
built for of the Jesuit seminary on the
Quirinal Hill.

The church of Sant'Andrea, an important

example of Roman Baroque architecture,
was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini
with Giovanni de'Rossi.

INTERIOR
Inside, the main entrance is located
on the short axis of the church and
directly faces the high altar.

The oval form of the main

congregational space of the church is
defined by the wall, pilasters and
entablature, which frame the side
chapels, and the golden dome above.

Large paired columns supporting a

curved pediment differentiate the
recessed space of the high altar from
the congregational space.
