1.

Hardly can the physical appearance of a capacitor tell its

true condition unless deformed or bulging.
2. The condition whether a capacitor is good or bad can be
determined easily with VOM or with s special Capacitor
Tester.
3. How?
1. Set the VOM to Ohmmeter Function.
2. Adjust the range selector switch to any of the multiplier
position : x1, x10, x1K, or 10K depending upon the
capacitance value of capacitor under test.
3. For values:
0.001 to 1µF – adjust VOM to 10K
1µF to 100 µF – adjust VOM to x1K
100 µF to 1000 µF – adjust VOM to x10
1000 µF to 10000 µF – adjust VOM to x1
4. Touch or connect the Ohmmeter test leads to the
terminals of the capacitor under test. Note: be sure not to be
touching the tips of the test leads with both hands otherwise
your body resistance is include in the test.
5. The needle or pointer of the meter will deflect to
the right indicating that the battery of the tester is
charging the capacitor. The pointer slowly returns to
the left towards infinite position indicating that the
capacitor has already be charged.

Good Capacitor
The tester will
deflect, and then
move back its
initial position
Defective Capacitor
1. The tester pointer won’t deflect at all. The capacitor
is OPEN
2. The tester pointer will rest on the 0 ohm scale. The
capacitor is SHORTED
3. The tester pointer deflects toward the right position
but does not return to its initial position or remains
stationary. The capacitor is LEAKY
The tester pointer will rest on the 0 ohm scale.
The capacitor is SHORTED
The tester pointer deflects toward the right
position but does not return to its initial position
or remains stationary. The capacitor is LEAKY
