This document appears to be the beginning of a study on discontinuity characteristics of rock mass for tunnel stability. It includes a list of student names and IDs, and outlines the background, objectives, significance and structure of the study. The objectives are to determine the effect of discontinuities on tunnel stability, analyze discontinuity characteristics, evaluate discontinuity behavior, and provide understanding of discontinuity properties. The study will involve literature review, field measurement methods, empirical analysis, and conclusions on discontinuity effects and recommendations for tunnel design.

Background of study • Rock mass • Discontinuities • Rock Mass properties • Tunnel 1.2 Statement of Problem For the stability of tunnel, there are so different parameters which should be considered. -rock mass strength -geology structures -main stress and strain -rock classification -discontinuities One of the most dangerous problem in tunnel excavation is the accidental falling of rock blocks that are formed by the intersection of the tunnel surface and discontinuities in the rock mass 1.3 Objective of the study 1.3.1 General Objective The main objective of these study is to study of the discontinuity characteristics rock mass for tunnel 1.3.2 Specific Objective To determine the effect of the discontinuity on tunnel stability To analysis the characteristics of discontinuities of rock mass for tunnels To evaluate the discontinuities behavior of rock mass Provide understanding the characteristics of discontinuities rock mass 1.4 Significance of study • Provide quantitative information for design and construction • The study is important to the any civil engineer involved in tunnel construction. • More over the study is significant to researcher who may wish to further their study on the same area. Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Theoretical Literature Review
• Discontinuity represents a plane of weakness within a rock mass across which the rock material is structurally discontinuous. RMR and Q classification system: • RMR System - depends on Six parameters • Q System Chapter Three Methodology Direct measurement on the ground Fracture set mapping technique- all discontinuities occurring in zones of 6 m by 2 m , spaced at 30- m intervals along the face, are recorded Alternatively, using a series of line scans provides a satisfactory method of joint surveying Drillhole inspection techniques Chapter Four Empirical Analysis Two main aspects in tunnel design -Precise estimate of the probable ground condition and excavation behavior. -The cost and safety assessment of the tunnel Rock mass characterization Rock mass classification Chapter Five Conclusions Discontinuities rock block and instability in tunnel It Emphasizes the role of Engineering Judgement The study of Discontinuity of rock mass is important before construction of any tunnel structure RECCOMENDATION Generally it is recommended to have proper investigation of discontinuity of rock mass before construction of tunnel for better out come and stability of the structure.
