 The main character of Mrs. Hamid
• Dedicated to her family, strong, good mother,
intelligent, capable, responsible, unselfish,
loyal, devoted woman, traditional.
• She sacrificed her needs to ensure that her
children were taken care of; cared for her
health because she did not want her children to
live with their father’s new wife.
• She maintained harmony in the home without
her husband.
• She always got up and met her children at the
kitchen door.
• She also joined a woman’s club and behaved
in a mature manner when confronted by an
uncomfortable situation with the second Mrs.
Hamid.
 eg :
• “Couldn’t’ you have stopped short marriage?”
• “Aren’t I enough to make you happy? I’ve
already given you children, organized
household, a warm and ready for all your
friend.”
 The main character of Mr. Hamid

• Selfish, inconsiderate, immature, cruel, ungrateful

and weak.
• He married another woman without telling his first
wife. He did not consider her feelings, or those of
his children in the matter. This embarrassed his
wife and children (Johan).
• He constantly spoke about his new wife to his first
wife without any guilt and left his first wife to see
his second wife whenever he wished.
• He did not spend much time with his children and
had five more children with his first wife.
 eg :

• “I don’t have to thank you for all these things.

You can’t look beyond the tremendous effort
you’ve put into this marriage. I’m not satisfied
with this life any longer”
• There are more reason but I don’t feel that I
must itemize them for you”
• You must get the picture by now.
• Mr. Hamid said that His wife is not interesting
any more because she is not a modern person.
he wanted his wife to have outside interests
but she refused. So for him, his wife couldn’t
make him satisfied any longer. They had
different sense of understanding of their
marriage.
• She had tried to advise her husband but he
refused to not getting another wife. Finally she
accepted and she devoutly believed that as a
woman she was destined to accept and to
protect. She felt pain but chose to put up a
facade; she "swallowed her pride with her
rice“
• The children saw when their father left the house,
they seemed mesmerized, expecting their dad
might turn back. Only Johan, the eldest children
knew that his father wanted to marry another
woman. He was painful but he tried to hide his
feeling and sometimes make excuse about his
father when the guest asked where he was.
• As a child none of us will be fine. Who wants to
have another mom? Of course I am broken,
maybe if it was me I couldn’t be as strong as
Johan. But sometimes we never know how strong
we are, until being strong is the only choice
• Mrs. Hamid showed not to leave her husband
despite his actions Because she considered
the fate of her children. She didn’t want that
her children felt missing their father. So that
she won’t ask for a divorce and left him.
• We may perceive Mrs. Hamid as being the most responsible
because she maintained the household independently, got
up with her children every morning, had home-cooked
meals ready, and refused to show her frustrations.

• The one who had more influences and power is Mr. Hamid,
because he was a man and husband. He had more
influences because he is also the source of their financial
nothing couldn’t change his decision.
 The convention

There was a convention in her club and she was represent local

organization that held in “her” city. She was expected that 2nd Mrs.

Hamid also attended the convention because she was known as an

active woman in organization. As she anticipated she really met her

husband younger wife. The younger wife actually does the same thing

and when the audiences gave the applause for the first Mrs. Hamid, She

was impressed with the graceful manner in which the 2nd wife protected

her rival’s feelings.

 Indonesian values

• “ But hadn’t it been my prerogative to be

upset with him each time he left me to go to
his younger wife ?”

The policy in Indonesia applied the value that

every woman has a prerogative as a wife and a
mother.
• After the convention I went home with a speck of
happiness. I used to think that I wasn’t good enough for
my husband. I used to be an insecure woman but it is not
any longer. I am a career woman now, furthermore, I can
manage my family better than other women. I should have
been proud of my self. Even though my husband has taken
another wife, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t t love me at all. I
don’t really need any plan to be more interesting than
other women for him, all I need is to be my only self.
• Day by day and years were done. I didn’t push myself to be
more attracted than my husband second wife anymore. I just
try to resolve my previous mistake, I try to be a modern woman
and try to have some outside interests but I never go beyond
the real me . I change the way I see and the way I think to be
better and better. I don’t compromise about my husband
second wife even sometimes he prefer to be in “her” house
than mine for weeks. But lately he began to be closer with me
and our children . We even go to a vacation together and he
often tell me his problems and we try to solve them jointly.
• I didn’t know how we became closer, even more
than when we first got married, but I hope it is a
good sign to our better future. He loves staying at
home with us now. I feel like my family is back and
Johan doesn’t have to tell lie about where his father
is, every time the guests ask.
I believe that as a woman I was destined to accept
and to protect. I accept the pain sincerely and I
protect my family truthfully .
