FULL DAY SCHOOL

Full day school has become a hot issue among society and the Minister indeed. This
learning program is applied for junior and senior high school students in order to facilitate them
with character education and general education as well. In addition, it is also to give additional
time to study at school for students. Nevertheless, the program causes hesitancy among some
people and especially students. It is also being banned because it does not bring a better
influence. However, this essay will discuss some bad impacts of full day school.

Full day school causes ineffective learning process. According to Rudolf Pointner, the
effective time to study is about 30-40 minutes. Moreover, pupils are in their focus mode at that
time. But, if they are required to study in the class until afternoon, they become passive and are
difficult to understand the materials well. For instance, students should write their notes and do
their exercises from the morning until afternoon. They will exactly become lackadaisical and
lose their motivation in learning. As it has stated above, learning process becomes ineffective
because of the implementation of full day school.

Another negative impact of full day school is that it can affect the socialization process of
the students. If the students spend times only to study at school until noon, it will reduce their
playing time. In fact, one of the social formation aspects of students is friends. About 70 percents
of a person’s confidence is affected by environment, included friends. Being at school for the
whole day consequently makes the initiative and creativity of students become less developed.
Then, the students will be difficult to express their opinions and get difficulty in making choices
by themselves. Therefore, studying all day until students become tired is not entirely good
because the other activities outside of the school also become one of the means for students to
develop themselves optimally.
Finally, full day school affects the students’ mental development. In fact, students feel
bored and frustrated while studying their lessons for long hours. They want to have break and
enjoy their noontimes at house after a tiring activity. In a simple case, a student of Junior high
school needs free times to take a nap or play with their friends. But, if the school activities are
extended they will not have time to do some refreshing. It is true that pupils need to study for
their future, but they also need leisure times. The leisure time is good for their emotional and self
confidence. Besides, it helps them to recharge their motivations to be ready for school tomorrow
after some pressure that they had at school. Surely, full day school blockades students’ mental
development.

Some people still argue that full day school is an effective program for students. The
implementation of full day school can build the students’ characters, so that students are more
focus on learning and avoids them from negative activities in a terrible environment outside of
the school. Furthermore, students can have extra times to comprehend their lessons which may
increase their academic achievement. However, a student’s accomplishments are not only seen
from the academic side at school, it is also noticed from the students’ skills. A research
conducted by Harvard University in the United States, it is about 20% of a person’s success
determined by hard skills and 80% by soft skills. The existence of full day school will place the
school as a prison for students and give a limitation for them to develop their life skills.

In conclusion, Full day school has plenty negative impacts for students. This is because
making students to learn until noon is not a good program for them. The implementation of full
day school makes students easily feel bored and lose their motivations. Consequently, the
learning process becomes ineffective. Therefore, if students have more time to study at school,
they will be easily stressed because they must force themselves to concentrate for long time. As a
result it will block the students’ mental development. Finally, full day school will also keep
students away from the playing environment or socialize with their friends and neighbors. It is
clear from the arguments above that the enactment of full day school causes bad impacts for
students.
