    New Zealand consists of two main islands and over 600 smaller islands located about 1500km southeast of Australia. It gained independence from Great Britain in 1947 and has a population of around 4 million people, most of whom live in the largest city of Auckland. The native Maori people were the original inhabitants who lived in tribes and traditionally tattooed their faces, though many died fighting over land in the early period. Today, Maori culture including greetings, dances and language coexist with English as the country moves forward together.
