INTRODUCTION

AUSTRALIA

• The Dutch first sighted Australia in 1606 before Captain Cook claimed the land for
Great Britain in 1770. The First Fleet of 11 boats arrived at Botany Bay in 1788 to
establish New South Wales as a penal colony (receiving convicts until 1848)

• NEW ZELAND
New Zealand is a youngcountry  in terms of its human history. It was the last large and
livable place in the world to be discovered. The first people to arrive in New Zealand
were Polynesian ancestors of the Māori, between 1200 and 1300 AD. The term 'Māori'
did not exist until the Europeans arrived.

CALTURE
WHAT IS CALTURE:
Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, beliefs and institutions of a
population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called
"the way of life for an entire society."

RELIGION
AUSTRALIA

Australia's major religion is  Christianity with the major denominations including


Catholic, Anglican, Uniting Church, Presbyterian and Reformed, Eastern Orthodox,
Baptist and Lutheran. The two major denominations, Anglican and Catholic, account for
36% of the Australian population.

New Zealand
is  nominally Christian, with Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Presbyterian
denominations being the largest. Other Protestant sects and Māori adaptations of
Christianity (the Rātana and Ringatū churches) constitute the remainder of the Christian
population.

LANGUAGE:
AUSTRALIA
• The English language as the national language of Australia.

NEW ZELAND
• NATIONAL LANGUAGE OF ENGLISH. ALSO SPEEK

DIFFERENCE
• New Zealand and Australia have different versions of English. One difference is that New
Zealanders have difficulty pronouncing 'I' sounds correctly. For example, instead of
saying "fish and chips" New Zealanders say " fush and chups."

DRESS:
New Zealand does not have a specific national dress. Customary Māori clothing is the
only form of dress that is distinctive to New Zealand. Kahu (cloaks) give significant mana
and honour to official occasions, such as royal tours and state funerals

AUSTRALIA DRESSES
Australia now has a national  costume. It consists of the closed fronted 'Bush Shirt',
waistcoat, moleskin trousers, elastic sided boots, Akubra or felt styled 

SPORTS:
THE NATIONAL SPORT OF AUSTRALIA IS CRICKET

THE NATIONAL SPORT OF NEW ZEALAND IS Rugby union

The New Zealand Flag has  a royal blue background with a Union Jack in the first
quarter, and four pointed red stars with white borders on the fly.
