NEW ZEALAND PRESENTATION

FLAG - Naili
The flag of New Zealand is a defaced Blue Ensign with the Union Flag in the canton, and four red stars with white
borders to the right. The stars' pattern represents the asterism within the constellation of Crux, the Southern
Cross.
The current flag was designed and adopted for use on Colonial ships in 1869 following an Imperial statute and
became New Zealand's national flag in 1902.
It has been proposed on several occasions to change the New Zealand flag in order to adopt a new design. There
have been many arguments for and against change, for example ... Pros: the present flag ignores the legacy
Maori and other peoples of the nation; and against: the flag has been used for a long time and has been the flag
that many New Zealanders have fought to defend, and that change would be an offense to them. Between
November 2015 and March 2016 people in NZ are holding two referendums about this change of flag.
The winning design, created by Kyle Lockwood, is the popular silver fern leaf and black and blue background, and
four red stars forming the Southern Cross. Prime Minister John Key, who had declared his preference for
Lockwood's models, was satisfied with the election and said that the presence of the fern leaf is "for many New
Zealanders, a national symbol than the 'Union Jack'" Actually, last Thursday, was the second referendum and the
56% of votes were in favor of maintaining its current flag
