PERPETUATION

LIFE
REPRODUCTIVE
STRUCTURES
IN PLANTS
The Flower:
The flower is the reproductive unit of some plants (angiosperms).
Receptacle
the receptacle or torus is the thickened part of a stem from which the flower organs grow.
CALYX
The green structures are called sepals, and together the sepals are called the calyx. They serve to protect the
flower and its reproductive organs, important to produce seeds for the perpetuation of the plant. In many
flowers, sepals are modified in various ways or even completely missing.

STAMEN
The male reproductive part of a flower is referred to as the stamen and consists of the filament and the anther.
The filament is a stalk-like structure that attaches to the base of the flower and supports the anther, which is the
structure that produces pollen.
ANTHER
The male reproductive part of a flower is called the stamen. It is composed of a long tube, called a filament, and
has a pollen-producing structure on the end.
CARPEL
The carpels are female reproductive structures that produce egg cells and protect a developing baby plant, or
embryo. The three main parts of a carpel are the stigma, style, and ovary. The stigma is where pollination occurs.
STIGMA
The mature ovary is a fruit, and the mature ovule is a seed. Stigma:
OVULE
Ovule, plant structure that develops into a seed when fertilized.

Monocots
The monocots :
Monocotyledons are plants that have only one cotyledon. They also have other characteristics, such
as flower parts in multiples of threes. This means they could have three, six or nine petals, or they
could have sepals that make up their flowers. They also have adventitious roots. These are roots that
can grow from almost any part of the plant that comes into contact with the soil, such as the stem.
Also, if you look closely at the leaves of a monocotyledon plant, you will see that the veins of the
leaves are parallel.
Eudicots
The eudicots are a hugely diverse and abundant group of angiosperm plants. They include over
half of the species of all plants and are found in a huge variety of habitats. Being angiosperms
they are seed-bearing, vascular plants that produce flowers, fruit and pollen. They are also often
woody plants and can grow into giant, long-living trees.
