FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS ON
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

What is Transportation System ?

origin destination

• System that moves entity from one point to another, and intentionally
this movement has to have certain purpose or natural cause, so it is
defined as to move from one point of origin to another point of
destination.
What are the entities?
• Human as person trips : by any mode of land, water or air transport

• Goods/Things as physical distribution/logistics/goods movement: by

any mode of land, water and air transport

• Data and Information as digital movement: by ICT, information and

communication technology
World of Change:

We live in a world of rapid change. This is particularly significant for transportation systems
analysis because of the strong interactions between transportation and the rest of society

• Basic Premises:
In general two basic premises underlie our approach to analysis of
transportation systems:

1. The total transportation system of a region must be viewed as a

single, multimodal system
2. Consideration of the transportation system cannot be separated
from other considerations such as social, economic, and political
system of the region
TOTAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

1. All modes of transportation must be considered

2. All elements of transportation system must be considered: the
persons and things being transported, vehicles in which they are
conveyed, and the network of facilities through which the vehicles,
passengers and cargoes move including terminals and transfer
points as well as line-haul facilities
3. All movements through the system must be considered, including
passenger and goods flows from all origins and destinations
4. For each specific flow, the total trip, from origin to final destination,
over all modes and facilities must be considered.

Prediction of Flows
• T = Transportation System •  So flow pattern F consists of volume V
• A = Activity System and level of service S
• F = Flow Pattern

≡ ∆T→ ∆A → ∆F......(changes) }→(V0,S0)

S = service function J; S=J(T,V)
V = demand fucntion D; V=D(A,S)

Implication for Analysis
Designing an analysis involves more than just developing a prediction model. The analysis must develop a strategy for analysis that includes plans for the full range of necessary technical activities:

1. What data should be collected ?

2. What models should be developed ?
3. How should the task of search, prediction, and evaluation and choice be organized
into a coherent process ?
4. How should technical activities interface with the political process ?
5. What should be the nature of continuing analysis and implementation process ?
