GEO-TAGGING WORKFLOW:

PHASE 1: Actual fieldwork where


the technician goes out to gather
data or geo-tag the projects

BASIC HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

Creating a Google Account
To create Google Account, go to: https://accounts.google.com/signup page.
Supply all the needed information and Click Next step.

OR
To create Google Account, go to: https://www.google.com
Click Signin (top right icon)
Click Add Account.
Click Create Account .This will direct you to the Create your Google
Account page
Supply all the needed information and Click Next step.
Now lets gets started

GPS Essentials
Click this icon found in
your Android device

If not yet installed:


Installation of GPS Essentials
1. Tap the “Google Play Store” or “Market” app icon on your Android device’s screen
to open the Android Market.
2. Tap the “Search” icon in the upper right corner.
3. Use the Search bar at the top to search for “GPS Essentials”.
4. Tap the GPS Essential like the icon above and select INSTALL.
Start Screen
GPS is currently disabled. Settings

If GPS is disabled on your device, you


will notice a yellow banner warning.
The banner has a link that you can
tap to get directly to the system
settings page to enable GPS.
On this main menu, click Satellites

This must receive signals from at least

CREATING WAYPOINTS
1. Select Waypoints icon.

2. Tap Add tool to create the waypoint.

3. Add a name. (description is optional)

4. Tap Create. This will then be added


to your waypoints.
Deleting Waypoint
1. Long Press the desired waypoint to be deleted. A trash icon
will then appear.
2. Select it.

Another Option:
1. Select the waypoint to be deleted.
2. Tap the icon.
Some devices wont have this, instead tap the Menu Key
beside your Home Key.
3. Select Delete.

Editing Waypoint
1. Select the desired waypoint to be edited.
2. Rename it or add a description if desired.
Exporting Waypoint
1. Select the waypoint to be exported.
2. Tap the icon.
Some devices wont have this, instead tap the Menu Key beside your Home Key.
3. Select Export.
4. Tap .
Saving to Another Storage Location or to SD Card
1. Tap the SD Card icon on lower left corner. (top right
on other device)

2. Tap the Back icon on upper left corner.

3. Select sdcard1
4. Tap Add icon to create new folder.
5. Name the Folder and Hit
CREATING TRACKS
1. Select Tracks icon.

2. Tap Add tool to create the a new stream.

3. Add a name.
4. Tap Create.
5. Tap the Add tool again and swipe to Tracks Tab.
6. Hit Start to start the recording.
Hit Stop to finish recording.
Hit Start icon to resume recording.
Hit the Pause icon to pause recording.

 Another way is to tap Record button on the top to automatically start the
recording.
Long Press and Select the edit icon to rename your track.
The bear paw icon in the notification bar indicates that GPS
Essentials is currently recording. This also means that GPS
Essentials will keep running in the background and the GPS
receiver will keep on running.

Keep an eye on your remaining battery while tracking.

Depending on the current tracking interval, tracking drains


your battery within a few hours.
You can only record to one track at a time.

When you are already recording to a track and start or resume


tracking, the current recording will be paused.

Track recording will stop automatically when battery power is low.


Exporting Tracks
1. Select the track to be exported.
2. Tap the icon.
Some devices wont have this, instead tap the Menu Key beside your Home Key.
3. Select Export.
4. Tap .
Saving to Another Storage Location or to SD Card
1. Tap the SD Card icon.
2. Tap the Back icon on upper left corner.

4. Tap Add icon to create new folder.
5. Name the Folder and Hit
GEOTAGGING PHOTO
1. Select Camera icon.

The GPS indicator


tells you which
location provider
reported the current
location.
It is N for the network
provider and G for the
GPS provider. The
provider is relevant
for the image’s
location and you might
want to wait for the
GPS provider to get a
more accurate
location.

Note: All photos in default are stored to com.mictale.gpsessentials on your internal storage.
Processing the Gathered Data
After collecting data, tracks must be exported, photos resized and
1 annotated and organized to prepare it for local storage and internet
storage/web-hosting using picasaweb.google.com

Exporting the tracks/waypoints and photos to PC or laptop:

2 1) Connect device to the laptop or Desktop Computer.


2) If it is stored to device storage, go to My Files and locate the file.
3) If it is stored to the SD Card, locate the folder where you have saved the
exported file.
4) In the device storage, look for com.mictale.gpsessentials folder for the
geotagged photos.
5) Transfer all the recorded photos/waypoints/tracks by folder/project
in your PC or laptop.
NAMING/SORTING A GEO-TAG FILE:
 Assign one file name per project:
FMRs
File Format: Municipality + Project Name MAIN FOLDER
Example: CDO-Oro FMR - PICS
Post Harvest Facilities and Other Projects - TRACKS
File Format: Municipality + Project Name + Recipient
Example: CDO-Oro Coop.

 Group all the photos by project in one folder using the same
file format+pics
Example: CDO-Oro FMR pics

 Group all the tracks and markers by project in one folder


using the same file format+tracks
Example: CDO-Oro FMR tracks

 Create a main folder for every project. Name it as the same


file name created above. Copy the folders of tracks and pics inside.
UPLOADING THE GEOTAGGED PHOTOS
1. Open the Google Chrome Browser.
2. Type on the address bar picasaweb.google.com

3. Log in to your Gmail/Google Account.


4. Click the Upload Button.
5. Upload your Photos by either of the following actions:
a) Locate your photos saved to your computer. Drag and Drop it to the picasaweb
page.
b) Click Select photos from your computer and locate the photos. Upload more if you
want to add more photos. Wait until it is finished downloading.
6. Rename your Album Name.
7. Click Ok.
8. On the right corner, just below your Name, click edit.
9. Change Visibility to Limited, anyone with the link.
10. Click Save Changes.
11. Click View in Google Earth (located lower right of the page).
12. The KML file will be then downloaded. Check the status bar. Rename it and save it to
your project folder.
Viewing the Tracks/Waypoints/Photos to
Google Earth
1. Go to your project folder, double click your exported track/waypoint KML
file. The track will automatically appear on the Google Earth.
2. Double click also your KML file of the photo you have uploaded on
picasaweb.

Saving Files in Google Earth


The last step in the geotagging process is saving the files to Google Earth.
This will make your geo-tagged images and its annotations become available
for public viewing or for reporting.
1. Right Click My Places.
2. Select Add.
3. Select Folder. Name it and Click Ok.
4. Drag your kml files (found on Temporary Places) to this added folder.
5. Right Click the folder and Select Save Place As…
6. Save it to your project folder. This one is the kml file combining the
track/waypoint with the photo.
