Oh God, enlighten our minds with truth;

Inflame our hearts with love;

Inspire our will with courage;
Enrich our life with service;
Pardon what I have been;
PRAYER Sanctify what we are; order what we shall be
And thine shall be the glory and mine the
eternal salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
MOTIVATION
WHAT DID YOU SEE IN THE PICTURES
SHOWED TO YOU?
DO YOU KNOW HIM?

In ancient Greek mythology, the god

Hermes served to interpret messages
from the other gods.
GROUP ACTIVITY
GIVE THE DEFINITION BASE ON YOUR OWN
UNDERSTANDING.

GROUP 1 – WHAT IS DATA?

GROUP 2 – WHAT IS HERMENEUTICS?
GROUP 3 – WHAT IS PHENOMENOLOGY?
DID WE DO HERMENEUTICS? HOW?
DATA
• “anything given”
HERMENEUTICS
• “interpreting data”
• Like Hermes’ name, the term
Hermeneutic comes from the Greek
word for “interpreter”.
HERMENEUTICS
• The concept of utilizing a system to
interpret was first noted in early
writings by Aristotle.
PHENOMENOLOGY

• “invites us to be open
to the variety of
experiences”
Example of Phenomenology

• “one refuses to go out of one’s

comfort zone by not tasting
“exotic food or riding
“extreme” carnival rides
APPLICATION
Think of a concrete situation involving someone you
dislike or have difficulty understanding in your
immediate family, among your schoolmates/teachers,
or among public figures. What if you were this person
trying to explain him/herself to people who don’t
understand him/her? What would you say? You are
given three minutes to deliver a monologue or write
a letter.
LET’S ANALYZE!
• Why is data important in the sciences,
especially the social sciences?
• What does hermeneutic phenomenology as
an approach contribute to the social
sciences?
• Why is it important to consider one’s
context?
ALWAYS REMEMBER!
• It is impossible to investigate experience
without at the same time inquiring into its
meaning; it is likewise impossible to
analyse meaning without being grounded
on experience.
ALWAYS REMEMBER!
• As an approach, hermeneutic
phenomenology represents an “attitude or
disposition of sensitivity and openness: it
is a matter of openness to everyday,
experienced meanings as opposed to
theoretical ones” (van Manen,2002,n.p.)
