At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to 1. Define Hydrometeorological Hazards; 2. Identify and describe each hazards that may happen in the wake of tropical cyclones, monsoons, floods, or ipo-ipo.; 3. Realize the importance of disaster risk reduction and preparedness. HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL HAZARD Process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption or environmental damage. (UNISDR,2007) EL NIÑO Associated with having no rain, hence the fear of drought and consequently dried-up fields and low water level in dams and reservoirs. EL NIÑO Spanish “the boy child” Commonly accepted term to describe the warming of the central and eastern tropical pacific ocean. LA NIÑA Associated with heavy rainfall and hazards such as flood. Spanish “the girl child” The Philippines is very vulnerable to climate- related hazards because of its location. An average of 20 tropical cyclones enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and 90 percent of them affect the country. FLOOD Affect low-lying and coastal areas due to the overflowing of water from lakes, streams and other bodies of water. FLOO Accumulation of D rainwater in drainages. Floods are caused natural and human activities. STORM SURGE Filipinos became more aware of storm surge because of Typhoon Yolanda that hit Tacloban City in STORM SURGE Before this, people had very little understanding of how storm surge can cause disaster. It was never imagined that a storm surge can be 18 feet high and go as far as 2 kilometers away the shoreline. STORM SURGE PAGASA-DOST describes storm surge as a sudden rise of sea level above the normal level on the coast due to a drop in atmospheric pressure and the force of the wind as a tropical cyclone approaches the coast. DOST PAG- The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and ASA Astronomical Services Administration (Pangasiwaan ng Pilipinas sa Serbisyong Atmosperiko, Heopisiko at Astronomiko,) is the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) agency of the Philippines mandated to provide protection against natural calamities and to insure the safety, well-being and economic security of all the people, and for the promotion of national progress by undertaking scientific and technological services in meteorology, hydrology, climatology, astronomy and other geophysical sciences.
