«Business Ethics of Thailand»

The traditional
greeting of the Thais is
called "Wai". To greet,
you need to fold your
hands, as for prayer,
elbows pressed to the
body, and your head to
touch the tips of your
fingers in a small bow.
The higher the palms
raised, the more
respectful the greeting.
The meeting time is also important - at 12, the
Thais have lunch, which no citizen of this
country will miss. And after 2 pm many are
already at home. Civil servants often leave
places without waiting for a noon. Try to
arrange a meeting in the morning, for example,
at 8.30.

In Thailand it is better to come in advance. It is

a very punctual country, and being late will be
considered a bad form and disrespect.
Whatever you say in your defense, the first
impression will already be definitely spoiled.
Thais are very restrained in the expression of feelings, they are
complacent and calm, they speak in a quiet voice.

if you start your speech too

emotionally, they will
consider you as a violator of
traditions and, in general, a
rude person you don’t have to
deal with.
The whole Thai team often comes
to negotiations. The fact is that
one person rarely has the power of
voice. Only in the discussion of
Thais are able to make a decision.

it is always recommended to
come to negotiations with a
professional Thai translator
who speaks both Thai and
English. He will always tell
you - in which key it is
better to have a
conversation, how to
behave, and most
importantly - what your
partners are saying.
