ISSUES IN INDIA
PRESENTED BY : ASHWINI YADAV AND
BENSON GRACIAS
INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL
ISSUES
 Everything that surrounds or affects an
organism during its lifetime is collectively
known as environment, which comprises of
both living and non living things.
 Environmental issues are harmful effects of

human activity on the biophysical

environment.
 Environmental destruction caused by humans

is a global problem and is continuously

increasing day by day.
 Human civilisation and globalisation are the
dominant culprits of constant change in the
global environment.
 Various processes that can be said to

contribute to the environmental issues are

pollution, global warming, ozone depletion,
acid rain, overpopulation, deforestation,
depletion of natural resources, etc.
 Some have also reffered infrastructural

development as a cause of environmental

destruction.
TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

 POLLUTION (AIR, WATER)

 BIODIVERSITY LOSS
 DEFORESTATION
 CLIMATE CHANGE
AIR POLLUTION
 Air pollution occurs when harmful or
excessive quantities of substances or gases
are introduced into the Earth’s atmosphere.
 Air pollution in India is a serious issue, 13 of

the world’s 20 cities with the highest annual

levels of air pollution are in India.
 Air pollution contributes to the premature

deaths of 2 million Indians every year.

WATER POLLUTION
 The largest source of water pollution in India
is untreated sewage.
 Other sources of pollution include

agricultural runoff and unregulated small

scale industries.
 Major cities of India produce sewage of

38,354 million litres per day.

 70% of India’s surface water resources and a

growing percentage of its ground water

reserves are contaminated.
 More than 500 million people live along the
Ganga river and an estimated 20 lakh persons
ritually bathe daily in the river. Ganga river
pollution is a major health risk.
 Ganga is currently the 6th most polluted river

in the world and a number of initiatives are

being taken to clean the river.
 The capital with a population of more than 10

million dumps 58% of the waste into the

Yamuna river. It is one of the most polluted
river of the country.
BIODIVERSITY LOSS

MAJOR THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY IS AS

FOLLOWS:

1. Escalating Human Population

2. Overuse of Natural Resources
3. Energy Resources
4. Natural Calamities
DEFORESTATION
 Deforestation is generally due to decrease of
forest land.
 Habitat destruction also takes place due to

deforestation.
 Increase in temperature.
 Animal death/extinction.
 Disrupted water cycles.
CLIMATE CHANGE
 Climate change is a result of global warming.
 Coral reef morality increases and erosion is

accelerated due to the increasing

temperature.
 Adverse effect on agricultural productions

due to disturbance in the rain cycles.

 Climate change also results in floods, land

slides and other natural calamities.
