 People mention them as… “ Heart felt”…., “Gut
feelings…, “choose feelings over logic!”……, “Dil aur
Dimag ki kashmaksh…, ” “Logical v/s emotional”….
and so on

 Do we have different dimensions of ‘self’


i.e. Thinking self & Feeling self
`WHY STUDY FEELINGS?
 The world around us emphasizes
planned, predictable, logical behavior in interpersonal,
social and professional relations
 Reacting to situations ‘emotionally’ is not taken
positively
 We learn to control, monitor and modify emotions even
before we are truly aware of them
 ….And still have emotional problems…

 Emotions, emotional reactions… etc. are scientific terms used


for Feelings

 Emotions are experienced at psychological and physical levels,


simultaneously
EMOTIONS: LAYPERSONS EXPERIENCE
 Poetry, literature, paintings, sculptures, dance music etc.
depict the emotional experiences using physical
terminology such as…
~Pounding heart, blushing, Goose pimples, Chill down
the spine, Spinning head, churning stomach…and so on
 Emotions are experienced by oneself without external
inputs also

 Expressing emotions by using physical terminology is
the most obvious experience common to everybody.

 Emotions commonly recognized across the globe are called


primary emotions. These are:

JOY, SURPRISE,
EXCITEMENT

ANGER, DISGUST, DISTRESS,

FEAR, SHAME
SECONDARY EMOTIONS

 Mix of more than few primary emotions

 Subtle in expression

 Difficult to decipher in case of unfamiliarity with person’s

 Secondary emotions indicate enhanced human


development in terms of sophisticated, symbolized
emotional expression instead of using direct and
unmodified primary emotion
