Defination

- A ligand is a species that donate

electron pair to a central metal ion to
form a coordination complex

- Ligands donate at least one pair of

electron. ( each pair of electron form
a single coordinate bond with the
central metal ion
 Has only one donor atom and forms only one dative bond with
the central mental ion.

Monodenate
Ligands
 Have two donor atoms
 Form two coordinate bonds per unit ligand with the central
metal cation.
 1,2-diaminoethane
Bidentate
Ligand
Example 5:

 Bidentate ligands can form ring structure with the central metal
cation.

 Cr(C2O4)33-

Bidentate
Ligand
 Form by attaching 3 ethanedioate ions to a chromium(III) ion.
 These ligands known as chelating agents and the complexes
called chelate compounds.
 Chelating agents are chemical compounds that react with
metal ions to form a stable, water-soluble complex.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetate ion
(EDTA)4 -

Hexadentate ligand
-has 6 donor atoms
-can form 6 dative bond with the central metal ion.
