Final Project

PROGRAMMING
FOR ENGINEERS
We take too much water from our aquifers in the state of Texas.

Background
To increase the amount of rain that is absorbed as
recharge into an aquifer, you will add a retention wall to
hold a portion of the rainwater on the recharge area for a
longer time. There are three different profiles that you
could use for the retention wall. (Top view)

Your Challenge w w w

You will need to determine when it will be best to use

each profile to maximize the recharge amount.
1. Unconfined aquifer

2. Only concerned with recharge due to rain

3. The recharge surface area is 50 ft x 100ft

4. The width (w) is 10 ft

5. The heights of retention wall, either 0.5 ft, 1 ft, or 2 ft

6. The slope ranges from 5º to 20º

7. The retention wall is located in the middle (see figure next slide)

Assumptions 8. The evaporation rate:

https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/evaporation-water-surface-
d_690.html when you assume the velocity of air over the water is zero.

9. Rainfall: 3 in/hour with the rainfall lasting 14 hours

10. Infiltration rate: 1 in/hr (velocity or speed at which water enters into soil
and is measured by the depth of the water layer that can enter the soil in
one hour. EX. An infiltration rate of 15 mm/hour means that a water layer
of 15 mm on the soil surface, will take one hour to infiltrate.)

11. Time Frame: Until the water is gone
